Fairly comprehensive coverage of CFD using the finite difference approach. Do not expect treatment of the subject with theorems and proofs on stability, accuracy and convergence. Having said this, this book is meant for engineers. The book contains various simple diagrams and examples which help with understanding of concepts and numerical schemes. The text would function as a good reference for anyone wanting to implement their own CFD code. Coverage of material can be brief in some sections, but is detailed enough to be self-starting. There is also a long list of references at the end of the book if the reader desires additional details missing from the text.I think there was a comment on the typeset quality of the book from a reviewer. The book is well bounded, but there are multiple equations scattered througout that are misprinted. Equality signs, brackets, and some symbols are replaced with boxes for example; this seems to be a document conversion error during the printing process. To point out a few, see equations: 7.9, 7.12, 8.104, 10.44. The publisher should seriously remedy this problem in future prints. Otherwise, book is 4/5 stars.

I come with a degree/background in mathematics. This book is my self-teaching, first exposure to CFD and numerical solution of PDEs. I'm studying chapters 3 and 4.I find this book useful but it's desirable that errata were posted somewhere. The book contains errors, like switching plus and minus signs. This type of errors would seem trivial to knowledgeable readers, but for someone trying to make sense of a new subject it slows progress.Another defect is how some calculations are shown. A sketchy explanation early on chapter 10 is followed by a numerical example, where it feels like numbers being thrown randomly. It would be more didactic to present numerical equations in factorized form, so as to allow the reader figure out where these numbers come from. I'll give the benefit of doubt on this point, considering that I skipped chapters 5-9.Unfortunately there are no answers to problems. Inclusion of answers would bring confidence to the learning process.Other than that, I think I'm getting value out of this book.

For an intro or undergraduate look at CFD, this book will cover all your bases. Tends to be light in a lot of the underlying theory however. Grad students or more in-depth users might consider looking elsewhere.

Very comprehensive book. Covered the first half in a graduate level CFD course. Good basics and advanced material. My only complaint is that it doesn't seem to be typeset using LaTeX (could just be because I'm a LaTeX snob).

Such payments to creditors leave less available to spend on goods and services.In explaining the mathematical dynamics underlying his “Minsky” model, Keen links financial dynamics to employment. If private debt grows faster than GDP, the debt/GDP ratio will rise. This stifles markets, and hence employment. Wages fall as a share of GDP...By being so compact, this book is able to concentrate attention on the easy-to-understand mathematical principles that underlie the “junk economics” mainstream. Keen explains why, mathematically, the Great Moderation leading up to the 2008 crash was not an anomaly, but is inherent in a basic principle: Economies can prolong the debt-financed boom and delay a crash simply by providing more and more credit, Australia-style. The effect is to make the ensuing crash worse, more long-lasting and more difficult to extricate. For this, he blames mainly Margaret Thatcher and Alan Greenspan as, in effect, bank lobbyists. But basically, the economic gatekeepers don't understand their own system, so they can't see the disasters looming, even when the data is forecasting it.To those unfamiliar with Steve Keen, he works from the edgy Modern Monetary Theory (based on a book by the same name by Randall Wray). This theory is seen by many in mainstream economics as being subversive and 'fringe' but, like many 'established' theories that face criticism ("the earth is actually not the centre of the universe"), the mainstream response is attack-to-preserve-our-dominance, regardless of whether the challenging theory has validity.Since I do not believe that the earth is the center of the universe, and am thus a subversive, not to mention the obvious mismanagement/misinformation/misunderstandings regarding recent economic policies and meltdowns, I was interested in this challenging theory of economics and was not disappointed.It's accessible, easy to read and understand, well written and clear - even to non-economists / non-mathematicians / non-statisticians / non-money-policy-bean-counter-types - and especially interesting. Chilling, actually. I don't normally read these types of books, but it really hooked me and shed light on a subject that is usually shrouded in secrecy and confusion. It also made me realise that we - the nations of this world - are in deep muck from the hobbled economics theory that the world currently embraces. And it's probably going to sink us all before fixing the errors that it relies on.P.S. If you are a conventionally-trained economist, it's up to you to decide if you're going to knee-jerk reaction this or if you're interested to possibly learn something new and counter to the mainstream. It's hard to see the light when you've been trained in the darkness, but none of us should claim to be above learning something new.

Fun book to have with lots of interesting facts. We purchased for our nine year old as a gift and he loves it. It makes learning fun for those who like nascar!

A little on the juvenile side where a teenager is concerned!

Alittle too elementary taht I was hoping for!

Good book, but was way to young for a 13 year old. Reviews had said it was appropriate for teens. Returned the book.

My son loves all things NASCAR and this book is also included. He happily reads this book and as a bonus it is an Accelerated Reader book!

Perfect for my 7 year old. Some of the math is super easy, and some is more of a challenge. He's a huge NASCAR fan, so he really loves this book.

The cover leads one to believe the book covers more significant math then just average speed over several laps. The picture of the back of the book which states it is for kids should be shown.

One of the readings for my credential program. This definitely isn't one of those hero teacher stories, but that's what makes each vignette poignant. It is more inspiring for the truths it carries and from the difficulties that Greg Michie faces as a teacher learning through trial and error, and illustrates what it means to care for students. If you're looking for a book that will show you raw experiences of what teaching is like, this is it. I know I will be rereading the stories when I need a reminder of how the grind of education reaps amazing, sometimes bittersweet rewards in how students' lives are impacted by good teachers.

Books on education typically come in two varieties--the extremely technical textbooks and the loosely based stories of someone's experiences. Michie is able to take this idea of having strong technical detail while not boring his audience to death and basing the entire reading on his own stories of teaching without feeling like you are reading a fiction novela.One of the most interesting and what I believe to be promising parts of his book is the fact that he constantly critiques his own teaching style and to be blunt, himself as a person and a teacher. And with his critique, comes the relevance perspective of the book. Schools today no matter where you are deal with this issue of racially different students, different achievement levels for students and the overall atmospheres our students live and grow up in.Through Michie's absolutely unique style we are presented with a new way of looking at education, looking at our own educational process, and most importantly our students. If you are looking to get into education, are already in it, or plan on doing some reading about education this is one of those must haves.4 Hopeful Stars out of 5!

Michie opened the book by saying it this is not a hero story, which helps defeat the stereotypes of white teachers in an urban school. Michie not only gives his takeaways from his experiences but also shows the students perspectives. He shows his intimate stories and experiences in the classroom and connects it to their school performance showing us that teachers don’t always understand why a student is acting a specific way.This book stresses that students have lives outside the classroom that can affect their performance. This book is enjoyable if you are currently or plan on going in to teaching. A must read if teaching students with different. Gives one mans truthful perspective of teaching in an urban school.

This book gives a lot to consider with regard to teaching and learning in an urban environment. It portrays the effects of poverty on inner city schools as well as some of the racial conflicts that can happen. This book is appropriate for all aspiring teachers (regardless of whether there is any intent to teach in an urban environment) but could be part of the curriculum for a mature high school ELA class.

Holler If You Hear Me was a pretty good book. Michie did a great job at giving his experiences at Ellison and Quincy. The thing I liked the most was how he humanized not only his students but also himself. Michie knew these kids were forced to have difficult lives from the start and that they continue to have difficult lives; no one chooses to go into poverty. But he also acknowledged that most of his work was done with other people. He wasn’t some sort of white savior but an honest, inexperienced teacher who found ways to reach these students along with the help of other colleagues. In the end, Michie not only taught his students well but also his students taught him well and judging by the looks of it he’s still learning, even after twenty-five years.

This is a great book about how education is in the real world and students' accounts of it. It's very easy to relate, being in a more story-like setting with characters you come to know and follow throughout the book. This makes it a much more digestible book and its text is much more flowing because of this.

I ordered this to preview for the possibility of using it to teach an introduction to education course. I am only about a third of the way through, but even though it's a decade (or so) old, the stories relate so well to what I think is happening in education today! I might not have this be the only book I use, but I will definitely supplement my class discussions with some of the chapters. I plan on buying the whole social justice set!

This is a beautifully written and compassionate account of how a very good teacher learned to teach -- by genuinely listening to his students and by continuously reflecting on his experiences. It is a book with heart and insight. And it's inspiring to see Michie's growth as a teacher from one experience to the next. This book is as real as it gets. Use in in your classes, if you teach prospective teachers. Buy it for anyone who cares about kids and public education. I love this book!
