Carmen Gentile is a journalist who has written for some of the world’s leading publications, including the New York Times, TIME, Newsweek, USA Today, and many others. He has covered both the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, embedding with soldiers on the front line. His work has also taken him to Nigeria, where he reported on the continuing unrest in the oil-rich Niger Delta. He began his international reporting career in the late 1990s when he was based in Cairo, Egypt.

LOVED every single page of this book! Through the tough terrain of Afghanistan, the busy streets of NYC and the high speed I-95 to Miami, Gentile makes you feel like you are traveling right along side him. His ability to describe, with such detail, the environment, the people with whom he lived and worked during embeds, and his changing emotional state, give such an incredible peek into his story. The handful of photos are the perfect accompaniment to Blindsided by the Taliban’s honesty, and solidify the “picture†that Gentile has already drawn in your mind with his writing. The choice of chapter titles and “datelines†may be one of my favorite aspects of the book. Every single title has you either cringing for his safety in the pages to follow OR belly laughing at his originality and humor. Blindsided by the Taliban is written with honesty from page 1 to page 219. You will likely read it in one sitting - and then find the nearest friend and demand that they read it too. The emotion is PURE, the descriptions are VIVID and the writing is SPECTACULAR.

But this isn't just a straight-line narrative, Carmen Gentile weaves the hard truths of his injury and recovery with his story of lost love. The writer's ultimate redemption, both professionally and personally, are a testament to his drive to get the news out there.Peppered with pop culture references and a fair number of graphic descriptions, this book isn't for the faint of heart. But it will give you insight into what the troops in Afghanistan go through and what the reporters covering the war often don't tell you.Note also that a portion of the proceeds from this book go to helping educate journalists on how they can keep themselves safe while gathering the news.
I was a "war correspondent" myself, covering wars and disasters in far-flung regions of the world. It ain't easy. I am retired and still grateful for reporters willing to dive in to the danger zones to bring us the truth. Carmen Gentile has proven by his own injuries that these reporters are a hair's breadth away from death. Coincidentally, I had just finished Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential" and found similarities between the two books: both authors might be considered bad boys, too much excessive behavior; both are extremely articulate; both are self-critical; both are honest about their professions. Gentile uses an effective device of putting his thoughts in italics, so we readers can follow his feelings in the moment. In fact, he is startlingly honest about his feelings. This book is a riveting read, both for the action, for the style, for the history. Do yourself a favor and read it.
"The grand old Duke of York, he had ten thousand men.He marched them up to the top of the hill, and he marched them down again."The nursery rhyme is a bit unfair to Frederick Augustus but perhaps it is what armies do. In Afghanistan, it wasn't so much marching as picking their way up shark tooth mountain paths in the morning, and then down again in the afternoon. Always knowing they are in the Taliban’s back yard. Using dark humor to get by, and wary that the embedded journalist wouldn't get them all killed. Or get a quote their mates wouldn't let them live down for the rest of the tour.This is fine writing, spare but detailed. The author draws you into the scene, and into his own head. But there is humor on every page. Did the operator of the RPG that mangled his eye get the piss taken for neglecting to arm the grenade? And the tale about sex of the 'sticks and stones may break my bones, but whips and chains excite me' variety. With the tangential involvement of the Christian Science Monitor.We are taken through the hard business of physical and mental recovery. Helped on the way by some lovely women, the odd she devil, and perhaps a motorcycle. And the cathartic business of getting back on the horse in outposts and forward operating bases in Kunar, Helmand and Khandahar. And cheap Kabul guest houses, so that at least a handful of freelancers are there when this endless war takes a turn that warrants a little airtime.We are told in the acknowledgements that the original title was Kissed by the Taliban. I like that. It will work for a UK edition, where a head butt is affectionately known as a Glasgow kiss.
