First, I would like to thank counselorchick, Kevin Johnson, bankee and any others who have obvious resentments towards AA. It is a program developed in the 1930’s and has been the most effective treatment for their members. It is a fellowship of men and women who have the same desire to stay sober. People who follow the program and commit to it eventually become happy, joyous and free. The program has evolved over time to what it is today. People who are cursed with this disease are NOT able to drink in moderation. I am not saying that I completely believe in the entire philosophy but most of it has merit. I think it is opalling and disgraceful for anyone to blame AA for hurting more people than they’ve helped! Are you f*****g kidding me? There is only one person to blame for the behaviors we exubed. Look in the mirror for the guilty party. The negativity in these posts truly proves how restless, irritable and discontent you are. I’m sure there are other programs that successfully help those with the disease of addiction. AA is not for everyone. It is also never AA’s fault when someone relapses. We are still there at every meeting, trying to help the next sick and suffering person.Your portrayal of the “program” is flawed and inaccurate to say the least. There have been 100’s of thousands of people who are now happy, joyous, free and living a life free of anger, depression, sadness and fear.

Simpley put this book will save your life and inspire you to find a path free of addiction . The first half of the book is how it works in AA the second half is all inspirational stories that truely do inspire you to live a better free of addiction life. Often at first when I first considered I might have an addiction problem I read the stories in the back of the book . I found every story I read was about me in some way . After a few reads I knew it was time to confront my addiction issues . Becuse of this book I am now free of my alcohol addiction and starting to piece my life back together . Any time I feel weak or need a bit fo inspiration I open the book and read for a while .This book is the back bone to AA and 12 step programs it will sve your life if you are honest ans willing . Its said you must hit rock bottom before you can make the journey to recovery but maybe if you read this book you will find a way that you can avoid the horor of the rock bottom experience. Good luck to you may you find the peace and serenity you so deserve in life give this book a shot and you will find a new way of life .

I'm not an alcoholic, but a good friend of mine suggested that I read this to gain a better understanding of "what she's all about." I'm truly glad I did. Not only did it deliver on her claim in spades, but it provided me with one hell of a perspective on everything she and so many others have dealt with, and just how vital a group like Alcoholics Anonymous is. I love reading things that provide me with that level of insight.

I’ve been sober almost six months. Thank god for AA and other such programs.About this book- it explains everything. First half talks about how AA came to be and last half shares inspirational stories of other addicts and alcoholics who have worked the program and now lead sober lifestyles. Very helpful and motivating.For anyone out there struggling with addiction, even if you aren’t ready to seek help, read this book. You at least will know you aren’t alone.

I'm so grateful for this book. My sweet daddy suffered from alcoholism and died unrecovered. Growing up in that, I had a lot of resentment and unresolved pain. This book showed me that my Dad was sick, and it helped me see that even though I do not drink- I was effected by alcoholism. Since I do not have this allergy/disease, I didn't understand it. It makes more sense to me now, and it has helped me on my healing journey. I cannot recommend this enough! I know you get audio chapters on Amazon (I believe it is the 1st Edition). I love the 4th edition. I believe it is worth buying even if you can hear it for free.

Don't get the Kindle version if you need to refer to page numbers. Cryptic "locations" (see pic) will not help if you want to use the "Big Book" for any serious work or study. There are plenty of free or online versions available that are paginated. As far as the actual content goes, who am I to argue with the cornerstone manuscript for a fellowship that has proven to help millions worldwide. IMHO modern medicine will never be able to come close to this free and ubiquitous prescription for dealing with ALL addictions (in MY lifetime at least).

Written many years ago and still relevant for todays alcoholic. I felt the book was telling my story and many times I was struck by the economy and perfection of the prose. i.e. 'a vision for you.' In my opinion this is very much an inspired novel that speaks directly to the alcoholic and offers a proven method of recovery and life seemingly beyond the reach of the active alcoholic....Indispensable information for the suffering alcoholics looking for recovery.

It’s nice to have this book available on Kindle. I use my phone, tablets, Mac and Kindle regularly, so this works well for me. The one thing that I would like to see different about this Kindle edition is to have the pages numbered just as they are for the paper book. The table of contents can help to locate specific information, but generally, I feel that this ebook still falls short. It would be far easier to follow along with other readers and references made about specific passages during meetings and when working with others. This edition doesn’t do this, so I don’t like to use the ebook at meetings. I would love to be able to go to a specific page and have the book handy wherever I go. Other than that, this ebook is still nice to have whenever I want to read it.

This is the second book I've read of Kerry Hamm, But I'm Allergic to Toradol!: Real Stories from a Small-Town ER. She tells many very interesting stories some are funny and some are not. She also offers helpful hints to enable you to understand the conditions that emergency room staff are going through. I'm very glad of the first book of hers that I picked up because it led me to this book. I believe I have collected all of the authors books and I intend to read each one. She's a great storyteller

I have enjoyed reading your books. They have reinforced some thoughts I've had and taught me others -- about empathy, sympathy, abuse, ignorance, about physical, mental and emotional exhaustion, in short - about the human condition. Try to ignore the negative comments. The people who wrote them have never walked in your shoes.

All of these books by Kerry Hamm are hilarious! While there are some sad stories for the most part these stories will have you shaking your head at the ridiculous excuses people use. I highly recommend any book by Ms. Hamm.

I am a registered nurse and I just love reading all of your story some sad but true and some funny. A great mix of things. I wish I could find a way to know the names of all the books you have written so I can make sure to teach them all.

Enjoyed reading this inside stories of a small town ER. I can see why the author would both love and hate her job.

True to life stories, but while some are funny, others are depressing. Don't read these books thinking they are comedy. I suggest these books for students in the medical/nursing fields, and for anyone who thinks they should attend their local Hospital.

A very entertaining, quick read. A series of vignettes both interesting and informative. I look forward to the next edition of Kerry Hamm's stories--all true.

I love these books by Kerry Hamm. Typos or not, I think they're great. Funny, interesting, and on occasion sad, Ms. Hamm's books cover one of my favorite reading genres in the best way possible.

I love this book! It has a great message about being an individual while not telling kids how unrealistically special they are. I don't like books that tell kids that they are more special than others, etc. This one talks about how sometimes you need to stand out and sometimes you need to fit in. I think it is the perfect balance of teaching kids that it's okay to be different and it's okay to be the same, so long as you stay true to who you are.I liked this book so much that I bought Linda Kranz's other book You Be You. I love that one, too!

What a lovely book! This gives inspiration to any person, young and old. Reminds you to stay who you are but not to veer off onto the wrong path. I actually found this when looking up inspirational books for graduation presents. It was among the list of dr. Seuss' oh the places you'll go and kissing hand. The child I am gifting this to will be starting school soon. I saw an idea of giving this as a gift to a child and having their teachers sign it every year with a meaningful message. Therefore I thought this book should be hardcover to withstand the years. The message really moved me. Before buying this book you can search the title on YouTube and it is read to you, page by page. I cannot stress enough how encouraging this is for anyone.

Sweet book with an important message on accepting yourself and others for who they are. I bought this for my preschool classroom and the children loved the colorful illustrations. We were able to make unique and fun crafts based off of the illustrations as well. The book is well made and sturdy and because it came in board book form, I was able to let my toddlers look at it without worry of them ripping it.

Great, colorful graphics! Wonderful "your place in people's lives, and how you treat them REALLY matters!" message in a cute, easy to read format.This will now be a "go to" gift choice for all kinds of children and people in my life!! Yay, Linda Kranz!!!

Did the cutest project with school kids - based on the awesome, amazing, and inspiring "life advice" Buy this book for any child who needs to hear kind advice with a modern twist.

Toddler really likes the pictures, but the content (to me) seems more like its written for adults. I mean - I get it... but I'm not sure my 3 year old really does. We do talk about the fish though and discuss differences between them and pick our favorites on each page. He likes the book, but not for the reasons one might expect.

I bought this book for my nephew who isn't talking yet, but has a Spanish speaking mother and English speaking father. It is absolutely adorable. The story is cute and the illustrations are so neat and colorful. Everyone in the family loves it.

This is a great book! We read it at school, then had the kiddos paint rocks to put outside in our "rock garden"! Very inspirational!

About the Author

Dr. Lani Simpson is a chiropractic doctor and a Certified Clinical (bone) Densitometrist (CCD). She has been an expert in women’s health care for 25 years, treating thousands of patients with a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to health. She cofounded the East Bay Menopause and PMS Center and the Osteoporosis Diagnostic Center in Berkeley, CA, where she lives. She is an expert in bone density, osteoporosis, and menopause and aging, and gives continuing education seminars to health professionals about these issues.

I found Dr. Simpson's No-Nonsense Bone Health Guide to be a comprehensively thorough, clear, and objective look at the science of bone health, density scans, medication treatments, and possible alternative (or additional) approaches to managing bone loss and improving bone integrity. I came to be especially grateful for this book after my most recent density scan when I was told that I had a 9% decline in my hip bone. One doctor I spoke with told me that I needed to get on medication immediately--"Time is running out."Having read Dr. Simpson's book, I knew that such a decline--especially in only one year's time--is extremely rare. So I consulted with my primary care physician and then had blood work done to ensure that there was no other underlying problem. There wasn't, and so I requested a second opinion from a certified clinical densitometrist. She assured me that an obvious error had occurred in a prior scan, seriously skewing the comparison with my most recent one. Had I not read Dr. Simpson's book (I've read numerous books on osteoporosis and Dr. Simpson's was the only one that talked in detail about how density scans are evaluated and what the numbers mean), I would not have known to question what I was told and would most likely be taking medication prematurely and very possibly unnecessarily. This book has been a godsend, and I highly recommend it.

I can say with confidence that reading Dr. Lani's thorough and well written book has given me hope for the future! Diagnosed with advanced osteoporosis and mistrusting of mainstream medicine, I found the information in her book to be so helpful in getting my attention, pulling me out of denial and putting me into action. Dr. Lani's realistic view of medications currently offered for treatment helped me to trust her message. The book has been such a resource for ideas on how to positively effect the outcome of the Disease of Osteoporosis using a holistic approach and understanding it's limitations. I continue to return to it as a resource. Thank you Dr Lani for writing such a important book!

This book is excellent for anyone who wants to learn about bones ! The research is so thorough, informative, well documented, and explained in a way that the average reader can understand. It also gives websites for further information and diet tips. I think everyone who is interested in bone strength - especially with osteoporosis - should study this book, especially before taking pills and medication prescribed by their doctor. Get all the facts first, then move forward. I am very thankful for this book and understand the condition of osteoporosis to a much greater extent now.

Dr. Lani Simpson’s book, Dr. Lani’s No-Nonsense Bone Health Guide is unique in its comprehensiveness; there's nothing else out there quite like it. We’re fortunate that she took the time to put her vast amount of knowledge into a book. She details the logical steps needed to find the cause of your bone loss, tips on working with your bone health team, and how to develop an effective plan of action to halt or slow down bone loss.Being a personal trainer for women over fifty, I went straight to the exercise section---it’s an excellent overview with many helpful tips. Almost every week, I recommend it in my strength training classes and follow up with clients to make sure that they've read it. They are relieved to have so many of their concerns addressed in one book by an expert in the field. Finding the particular reasons for one's bone loss is just as important as getting going with the right exercise and nutrition program or medication.As a bone densitometrist, Dr. Simpson explains how to get the best DXA scan possible because there are many ways that they can be improperly administered and interpreted. Then, her emphasis is on finding the causes for a person’s bone loss and the steps needed to address them. Her book is packed with information that, as she says, “Anyone with a skeleton…” will find useful. The sections on nutrition and exercise are detailed and specific to bone loss. Highly recommended!

When I was first diagnosed with osteoporosis over a year ago, I was lost and scared. After consulting many doctors who gave me very bad advice., I decided that I needed to educate myself about my bones. I found Dr. Lani’s book and read it several times. I began to gain confidence that I could now talk to my doctors and get the correct blood tests to find out why I was losing bone.Dr. Lani’s book guided me to make smart decisions and put together a sound bone health plan. This book reported the facts whether you like them or not. The author was in no way against doctors. She repeatedly said to check with your doctor before doing anything. She gave you many alternatives for you to explore before resorting to medication. She left the decision up to you but no matter what treatment you choose, she gave you hope. You are not doomed with a diagnosis of osteoporosis, you just have to use common sense and be more mindfulness about your actions. My own doctor just wanted to discuss medication alone, which I did not want. Now I have the hope that I do have control and my fulfilled life is not over. I now have determination to do what I feel is best for me. One size does not fit all. No pun intended but just get a backbone and do something about your situation.

As others have pointed out, much of the information in this book can be found on the internet for free. The information on the vagaries of bone scans is interesting and it sounds like the medical profession should be doing more to police this field and hold professionals accountable. The sections on nutrition and supplements seemed lacking - like the author wants to give advice, but doesn't want to be held accountable, so sticks to generalities. The exercise section was lacking. This is not a book I would refer to again or go back to look up information in, so I gave it away.

About the Author

Sandra Day O’Connor was born in El Paso, Texas, and raised on the Lazy B Ranch. She attended Stanford University, where she took Wallace Stegner’s writing course. She began her public service in Phoenix, and was majority leader of the Arizona Senate before becoming a judge. She is the author of Lazy B, a memoir about growing up in the Southwest, and The Majesty of the Law, a reflection on American law and life. President Reagan nominated her as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, and she served from 1981 to 2006. She serves as Chancellor of the College of William & Mary, and is on the board of trustees of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

For me this was a 5 star wow, right from the get go, so it was interesting to see how wildly the reviews vary in Amazon. From my perspective, I never realized just how myopic our view is of the Supreme Court - what it is, and what it does, until I read this book. For instance, I never really understood how much of what the supreme court does derives from their own rulings, and not from a well defined constitutional authority. And the current brouhaha over the Garland nomination, which seemed like high political drama, pales in comparison to previous political disputes that have surrounded the Supreme Court. This book provides a good history of the Supreme Court, but in the context of the personalities that shaped it. I think what some reviewers wanted was a more politically oriented book, which this is not.

Out of Order: Stories from the History of the Supreme Court by Sandra Day O'Connor"Out of Order" is a brief history of anecdotes from the Supreme Court. Sandra Day O'Connor provides a mildly insightful and readable book but overall it's disappointing. The book fails to take advantage of the unique insights that a pioneer of O'Connor's caliber would have had. It's a book that quite frankly could have been written by almost any historian. It was a missed opportunity, it should have provided readers with the historical perspective from the first woman of the Supreme Court. This bland 256-page book is composed of the following chapters: 1. Looming Large, 2. The Call to Serve, 3. A House is not a Home, 4. Humble Beginnings, 5. Itinerant Justice, 6. The Supreme Court's Changing Jurisdiction, 7. Golden Tongues, 8. Customs and Traditions of the Court, 9. Some Laughs on the Bench, 10. Larger-Than-Life-Justices, 11. Gone but not Forgotten, and 12. Supreme Court "Firsts".Positives:1. A straightforward book that is accessible to the masses.2. An interesting topic in the hands of a former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.3. A brief history of the evolution of the Supreme Court via stories.4. The book captures many of the historical power struggles between the President and the Supreme Court. " But once fate brought them to their respective positions of authority in 1801, Jefferson and Marshall came to blows in ways that put even today's climate of political acrimony to shame".5. There are many trivia-worthy nuggets in this book. Can you name the only President that became a Chief Justice? Find out.6. A brief history of the judicial appointments. The impact of the appointments, the noteworthy opinions and find out the worst opinion in the court's history.7. The history of the physical "home" of the Supreme Court.8. The progression of the Supreme Court from its humble beginnings to its current solid foundation.9. The fascinating history of the riding circuit. "From 1789 to 1891, the Justices were required by law to "ride circuit." They traveled thousands of miles each year to preside over trials and intermediate appeals all over the country. In fact, the Justices spent a lot more time riding circuit than they did hearing cases at the Supreme Court".10. The evolution of the caseload. The number and control of the cases to be decided. "Taft's extraordinary push was successful. The Judges' Bill passed and, in hindsight, we can see that 1925 marked the birth of the modern Supreme Court".11. The greatest oral advocates. "In the realm of advocacy, Webster doesn't merely sit in the Pantheon: He is Zeus himself".12. The customs and traditions of the Court. "ONE OF MY FAVORITE traditions--the judicial handshake--takes place just before oral argument. Before taking the bench, as we say, the Justices gather in the robing room and each Justice shakes hands with and greets every other Justice--thirty-six handshakes in all".13. The portrait of four Justices who were larger-than-life. Interesting.14. Laws governing departures.15. Some interesting tidbits on the "Firsts". "But perhaps the culmination of this trend came with Chief Justice John Roberts. He was the first Supreme Court Justice to take the seat of a Justice for whom he had clerked, Chief Justice William Rehnquist".16. Includes The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America and the Constitution of the United States.Negatives:1. Overall disappointed. The book is not engaging at all. I was hoping to hear O'Connor's voice, get HER opinions, at the very least interesting stories from HER perspective but sadly no.2. O'Connor should feel free to voice her opinions. She is no longer a working Justice, time to loosen up.3. Even in the chapter on the "Firsts", O'Connor doesn't really say much about her tenure.4. If the chapter "Some Laughs on the Bench" is any indication, the Supreme Court lacks humor indeed. At least we learn Scalia has a tendency to laugh a lot.5. The book really lacks depth.6. The book doesn't link to notes.7. The book seems rushed to me.8. No formal bibliography.9. There are much better books about the Supreme Court.In summary, In summary, a mixed bag. There are some interesting anecdotes and amusing stories but overall I was disappointed. Sandra Day O'Connor failed to open up to the readers. She doesn't provide her voice, her opinions, her perspective. Such a missed opportunity to engage the readers with her unique experiences as the first woman of the Supreme Court. I was honestly hoping for more. Pick a copy from the library but not worthy of a purchase.Further suggestions: "My Beloved World" by Sonia Sotomayor, "The Oath: The Obama White House and The Supreme Court" and "The Nine" by Jeffrey Toobin, "Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge's View" by Stephen Breyer, "Matter of Interpretation : Federal Courts and the Law" by Antonin Scalia, "The U.S. Supreme Court: A Very Short Introduction" by Linda Greenhouse, "Five Chiefs: A Supreme Court Memoir" by John Paul Stevens, and "The Brethren" by Bob Woodward.

I really wanted to like this book. I am a huge supreme court follower and have admired Justice O'Connor ever since she was appointed over 30 years ago. Before reading this book, I heard Justice O'Connor interviewed by Terri Gross on 'Fresh Air' on NPR, and it excited me about the book. Sadly, the book does not live up to all the hype one would expect when any sitting or former Supreme Court justice picks up the pen.The book is very superficial in its coverage of the different stories that Justice O'Connor describes. There is very little depth to the book, and I often found myself wanting to know more about what I was reading. Particularly disappointing was the chapter entitled "The Call To Serve" which essentially describes every president and who he nominated to the Supreme Court, but not in any significant detail. Towards the end, Justice O'Connor talks about 4 unique and memorable justices - Justices Field, Holmes, McReynolds and Douglas - but the treatment is so superficial that one feels the need to go and read more about these distinguished men in order to really understand what they were about.There are some bright spots to the book. The chapter entitled "Itinerant Justice" is fascinating in its coverage of when justices were required to ride circuit. The two latter chapters "Customs and Traditions of the Supreme Court" and "Some Laughs on the Bench" also are quite interesting. Overall, these few bright spots are again marred by the superficial coverage given to the topics in them by the author.What makes me sad about this book is that it could have been so much better. There are numerous fascinating books out there about the Supreme Court - Peter Irons' "A People's History of the Supreme Court" comes to mind - and this one could have been among the ranks. But, unfortunately, it tries to cover too many things in too superficial a fashion, and as a result, doesn't really break new ground at all.For the Supreme Court lover, this one is nice to have to keep on the bookshelves with all the others. For others, it might be worth passing on this book and read one of Justice O'Connor's other excellent books.

This is a fascinating history of the establishment and evolution of the United States Supreme Court, by the first woman justice, Sandra Day O'Connor. It came as a surprise to learn that the Supreme Court didn't even have its own premises until 1935, and in the very early days, the court had very little work ! The author pays great respect to Chief Justice John Marshall, who brought the court to prominence in his long period of office, and pulls no punches in describing the rude and cantankerous Justice McReynolds. She details President Roosevelts attempt to 'stack' the court and also describes former President Taft's appointment as Chief Justice as the 'crowning achievement of his career'It would have been interesting to learn more about the justice's remuneration; what was John Jay's salary compared to President Washington ? How does Chief Justice Roberts salary compere to President Obama ?
