Mayor, a folklorist and historian of science, continues the project of understanding what premodern peoples made of fossils that she started in The First Fossil Hunters: Paleontology in Greek and Roman Times. Surveying accounts of Native American tradition from the earliest Spanish conquistador and missionary records of Aztec and Inca lore up through present-day Indian oral histories, she correlates Native American myths with the fossils they are known or presumed to have observed. The results are unsurprising: giant fossil mastodon and dinosaur bones engendered myths about giants—giant elk, bear, birds, centipedes, subhumanoids and mysterious "water monsters"—who populated the earth until, in a nearly universal motif, they were killed off with lightning strikes by sky spirits. Indian notions of "deep time," changing landforms and climates, and the descent of contemporary species from fossilized ancestors anticipate the insights of present-day geology and evolutionary theory, she contends, while Inca legends of extinction by "fire from heaven" prefigure modern theories of extinction by asteroid impact. Her research makes for a competent if dry study in comparative folklore, but her claim that these myths "evince the stirrings of scientific inquiry in pre-Darwinian cultures" downplays the elements of animism and supernaturalism that are so radically at odds with the materialist and mechanistic thrust of modern science. "Fossil Legends of the First Americans is a comprehensive study of the intersection of oral history, traditional social and cultural norms, paleontology and science, across the North American continent.Mayor presents a multi-faceted look at many overlapping American- Indian and European-American explanations of fossils, bones, and other mysterious findings. As a former folklorist, I especially liked Mayor's even-handed work in getting out both sides of the story.She points out that Native explanations, expressed in mythic language, were based on repeated, careful observations of geological evidence over generations. Earth's history was visualized as a series of ages marked by different landforms, climates and a succession of different faunas no longer alive today. Not only did many of the insights about Earth's past anticipate modern scientific theories, but some traditional narratives were revised to integrate new scientific knowledge. These activities show the stirrings of scientific inquiry in pre-Darwinian cultures.Mayor also devotes some time to the English botanist, Mark Catesby's 1725 visit to Stono, a large plantation near Charleston, South Carolina, to examine several colossal teeth dug up in a swamp by slaves. Catesby tells us that the slaves immediately recognized the shape of the teeth. In the "concurring opinion of all the negroes, native Africans, that saw them," wrote Catesby, these were the molars of "an elephant," an animal of their homeland.In the Year 2000 conflict arose over the discovery of what may be the largest dinosaur ever found in North America, the hundred-foot-long, thirty-five-foot-tall Alamosaurus in Big Bend National Park in Texas. Some accused the National Park Service's paleontologists of stealing fossils from public land when they allowed the dinosaur to be hauled off to the University of Texas lab in Dallas. Why not build a display over it, like Dinosaur National monument in Utah?The Natives core belief about this "taking" was expressed by the Oglala leader, Johnson Holy Rock, in 2002: "Fossil bones should be left in the ground as they were found. It is not good to take them away and put them in a museum. If we want to understand them, shouldn't we go to see the animals where they lived and died?"Holy Rock singled out the Hot Springs Mammoth Site in South Dakota as a positive model of how traditional Native Americans would like to see fossils treated and preserved. Another outstanding example of the integration of Native culture and paleontology is the state-of-the-art Journey Museum in Rapid City in the Black Hills of South Dakota, dedicated to the region's geological, paleontological and Lakota history. The founders of that museum assembled a Lakota Advisory Board to ensure that a Native perspective helped shape all aspects of the museum.This book deserves better editing, layout and design. Adrienne Mayor writes beautifully for academics and regular folks. Her discussions are scientific and exhilarating as she analyses the fossil remains as found by ancient peoples .... what did they think they had found? how did they interpret the bones of the dinosaurs that they discovered? what effect did their interpretations have on future generations?

I bought this book because I enjoyed Mayor's previous book and I have become interested in American prehistory. This book is more readable than the First Fossil Hunters (which I also enjoyed and learned from), and makes me aware how very large this continent is and how little I know about it. The author's sympathy with the pre-literate peoples does not diminish her appreciation of modern science. It's an enjoyable read and makes me want to visit regions more fossiliferous than New England.If you happen to be reading it at the same time as When They Separated Earth From Sky (Barber and Barber) it's like being in the middle of an enthusiastic conversation between friends and colleagues.

This is really wonderful book! I recommend it to everybody interested in fossils although the book is more about people than about old bones. Tons of fascinating facts and legends. The book is also quite serious study of native american folklore as well.

Mayor is a scholar of the overlooked chapters of history and prehistory, such as historical Amazons and early automata. Here she asks what Native Americans thought of the fossils in fossil-rich North America, and uncovers a treasure trove of anecdotes, myths, and fossils.The Native contributions to fossil lore were long overlooked, and most are lost. Early fossil hunters sometimes paid Indians to lead them to fossils, but few thought the locals had anything to offer as far as scientific understanding or even interest, dismissing them as mere curiosity collectors or primitive object-worshipers. (The great George Gaylord Simpson, writing in 1942 and 1943, was especially harsh on the idea the peoples who'd been on the continent longest had learned anything useful.) Mayor, though, finds interest in fossils existed over the continent. If Native Americans lacked the European-American scientific method to put things into context, many tribes considered fossils very important. They gathered fossils, traded them, incorporated them in sacred and everyday art, and speculated about what kind of beasts had left them behind. It was logical to attribute them to monsters of legend, since there was no other cultural context to put them in, at least after the human conquest of the continent had (according to somewhat disputed orthodoxy) wiped out mammoths and other beasts. They understood these bones came from many types of giants/animals, including the great thunderbirds and both land and water monsters. Storytellers filled in the background with legends about how these creatures killed each other or, rarely, were killed by humans. Fossils are kept even today in medicine bundles and other Native-held artifacts, although many more have been taken to museums (sometimes with the consent of local tribes and sometimes not: Mayor reports some tribes considered them part of the story of the earth, and removing them was disrespectful or would lead to misfortune. An early point of contention was that bones eroding away in the air had to be removed, according to white scientists, for preservation, while some Indians objected this was interfering with a natural cycle. Mayor went to great lengths to talk with paleontologists, tribal historians, old shamans, and others who could shed light on the connections of the past. The controversies continue into the present, with the battles over Tyrannosaurus Sue and other specimens. While it's possible to wonder whether Mayor puts a bit too much stock in Native understanding of the fossils, she takes time to deconstruct such frauds and myths as the cave full of red-haired mummified giants in Nevada that conspiracy-lovers (and some sincere cryptozoologists) think were hidden or destroyed. She notes there are a few claims of unfossilized dinosaur bones, although these may be due more to linguistic / translation difficulties than to real (extraordinarily rare) bones not fully mineralized. My main nitpick in this book is illustrations. While maps of each region Mayor covers are provided, I and ted some of the crucial small areas mapped in more detail. There are many photographs and drawings here, but I found myself wanting more: perhaps a companion volume of art and photography would be an interesting future project.If the book's not quite perfect, it is a (literally) groundbreaking work that shows how much we've overlooked that is still accessible. Mayor knows how to document: the index and Notes take up 100 pages, so there are plenty of additional sources to delve into. Hopefully this book creates more respect for Native Americans and for the fossils of dinosaurs and ancient mammals they saw and gathered. Much has been lost, but much remains to be explored.

I have tutored a great number of students in math. Most of these students (even ones who have progressed to Pre-Calculus and beyond) are lacking an understanding of basic mathematics (or have long since forgotten). For adult students who have been out of math class for 20 years or more, especially if they consider themselves to be poor math students, I prefer to start at "the beginning".That's where this book comes in. It covers whole numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), fractions (prime numbers, factoring, operations), decimals (converting to/from fractions, operations), percents (converting to/from decimals or fractions, word problems, ratios and proportions), negative numbers, algebraic expressions (translating from words into symbols, exponents, solving), polynomials (factoring binomials, quadratics, and trinomials), linear equations (ordered pairs, graphing, slope, solving systems of equations by elimination or substitution, quadratic equations (standard form, roots and factoring, quadratic formula, completing the square), sequences and series (arithmetic, geometric), geometry (lines and angles, constructions, relationships, parallels and transversals, congruence theorems, circles, polygons, similar figures), measurement of geometric figures (areas of quadrilaterals/triangles/circles, Pythagorean theorem, volume and surface area of solids, metric system), graphs, probability (permutations, combinations), and trigonometry.I particularly like the discussion of "completing the square" as this topic is usually not well discussed in modern math textbooks (leaving students thoroughly confused about a fairly simple technique). There is also a nice discussion of geometric constructions, which I remember vividly from ninth grade geometry, but have yet to meet a student in the past ten years who has even heard of this (although I had a great, tough teacher).I am currently using this book to prepare an adult student for the Accuplacer exam (math placement exam in college), but have a reference copy for myself as well. I believe it would be useful for homeschool families, adults taking a math class, and anyone who wants a good reference of the most relevant math topics.If there is a better, all-around beginning math book, I haven't found it. Highly recommended.

Talese, by letting so much of the story be told in the Voyeur's own words, by going into such intimate detail of the Voyeur's life, asks the question of us, the readers, Wouldn't we, if we could have gotten away with it, done the same? Talese doesn't judge. While he clearly places himself above the Voyeur culturally and intellectually, his words occasionally seething pretension, he lets the reader decide whether Gerald Foos is a reprehensible creep, or just another person who thinks nobody is watching, only following human nature.The New Yorker article, which I initially thought so fantastic it had to be a fiction, is really sufficient to tell the bulk of the tale. The book follows up, affirming that this really did happen, and that the aftermath was nil. For that purpose, the Netflix documentary does the job, and if you've seen it, and read the original article, there's not much more in the book to make it worth reading. That's not entirely true. There are some stories, told in Foos' sometimes eloquent prose, which are so fantastic as to almost certainly be fantasies. Others are written in a style much more consistent with fabrication than to contemporaneous recollection. By including these stories, without passing judgment on their veracity, Talese lets the reader's own intuition decide to what extent Foos is credible. Again, we the tables are turned, and we become the voyeurs.

I saw the documentary, which made me want to read the book. Why? The lurid life of a man snooping on his motel guests was a curiosity. What I discovered in this book is that Talese and his subject are both obsessed with the concept of voyeurism. Talese admits his life as a journalist is that of a voyeur, which makes sense, and his protagonist here is often given too much credit for being a de facto researcher obsessed with the personal lives of his guests. When the motel owner witnesses a murder in his hotel and doesn't call the police I could no longer give him credit for any of his curiosity. He chose protecting his voyeur palace over a human life. What I found most interesting was the years of being voyeur proved to the motel owner not that people's intimate lives are salacious, rather they are dreary and often unhappy in the extreme. That revelation is what redeems the book.

What a great book! I love Gay Talese's style of writing he's such a wonderful journalist. Just tells the story like it is, doesn't add his emotion into it, really great journalist. Anyway, the story was rather shocking, there were lots of moments where I was shocked and disgusted, and doesn't that make for a great book? I also watched the documentary on Netflix (which was released recently) and it was nice to see the motel owner in "person" - haha. I thought it was hilarious the motel owner considered himself a researcher. Anyway, this book was great. I loved reading all the stories and having a private peek into folks' sex lives... I guess I'm a voyeur too in a way!

This is obviously a minority opinion but I rather liked this book. The "voyeur" is a creepy guy and his attempt to make his observations sound like serious sexual research are unconvincing. His interests are prurient. However, he often makes somewhat astute comments about the people he observes. That doesn't redeem him in any way but it does make for some interesting reading. There are some discrepancies in his story but it rings true on the whole.I also found no reason to be critical of Mr. Talese's conduct. His actions were appropriate for a journalist.

A voyeur who owns a motel contacts the author (Gay Talese) and wants to tell his story. The voyeur (with his wife's permission) spends years recording on legal size paper what he saw through a vent in the ceiling. He also writes his conclusions for each entry. So this book is mostly fact, with photos of the real motel. Of all the stories, lesbian women make love the longest and have a lot of orgasms. Most married couples argue, and don't have sex. The men, in general, are insenstive trolls. When a guy screws his wife, it's mechanical and leaves her frustrated. (Just like real life???)

While I would say the story is unbelievable if true, I found it to be not believable. In any case the telling of the story is clunky. It would have been better if Talese wrote the narrative of Gerald Foos, and then wrote this book as the narrative of writing that book. Talese does a good job in his description of people, places, and events; but there just isn't enough here to justify a book. There was a share of repetition and analysis that helped to stretch the book out far enough to make me desire its final page. Talese claims to strive for factual information, but adds his own opinions and analysis. I would have preferred more factual information. I'll form my own opinion through my own analysis.

A quick read, and one of my favorite reads about human behaviour. I'm a total off-road rookie and recently purchased a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR BOTH ROOKIES AND EXPERTS! It shows many trails and rates them easy/moderate/difficult. I've been slowly working my way through each level of trails. Great maps, excellent descriptions of how to get to each location and detailed trail mileage. Great book for anybody in Boulder/Longmont/Loveland/Ft Collins area.

I have lived in Colorado my whole life and this book is still really helpful.The trail descriptions are really accurate and the vehicle recomendations are dead on.They use gps coordinates for the start points and other spots on each trail. If you have a Garmin you can plug them in and drive right to the trail.Very informative descriptions of trails and what to expect.

While not as extensive as some other books, this book contains trails worth seeing. Good descriptions, maps and photos. I think the Guide to Colorado Backroads (not Northern) by the same author is a little better, this is definitely a good buy

I've had this book for a long time and just refreshed it to get the spriral bound version. I was new to off-roading 6+ years ago when I went out to visit a friend in Colorado for the first time after purchasing a truck with 4x4 and skid plates. The book has been immensely helpful for a novice like me, who is willing to take his stock truck on some moderate adventures. I skip the advanced/difficult stuff, so no idea how well those are documented. For what I need, it's perfect. Easy to read and very well documented.

If you are a first time visitor to the area looking for jeep trails you need this book. Next to talking to the locals this book will let you know where to go and gives great directions to the start and along the trails. Only reason I did not give the book 5 stars was from my experience on some of the trails in this book. I found the trail descriptions leaning towards the cautious side maybe a little to much. But on the other hand better this way than to get people in trouble. I'm just being picky here but I will say this series of trail guides belong in your jeep or FWB if you are planning a trip to the covered areas. I guess I've talked myself in to a five star rating for all three of Mr. Wells and Peterson's books.

These are the only books to buy for trail advice and locations... only issue is with only 3 categories, (easy, intermediate, difficult) it's hard to judge without talking to others who have run the trail, what is REALLY difficult, and what is just difficult for a stock rig. I have a 99 Tacoma with 33' tires and a locker and many of the difficult trails I walk through... yet some need lockers front/rear and 35+ tires.

These books are all great! I love the detail and the guidance. I used these with my very avid 4 wheeler boyfriend and he thought they were great as well. It contains maps, which help since many of these trails are hidden, a difficulty rating on each trail, and a verbal detail of the trail, as well as any sights to see to the final destination, either turn around and go back or loop around. It was the perfect gift for a 4 wheeler guru.

Excellent guide that breaks trails down into EASY, MODERATE, and DIFFICULT and gives examples of vehicle appropriate for each trail category. Directions on how to access trail head plus driving tips and local numbers to check road conditions. We are going to buy the other Colorado version that covers the rest of the state.

A fascinating view of the world from England in the 1850s. Long winded as was common in the time but full of nuggets of information.

I purchased this book awhile back to better study the of "Papal Antichrist", which was once mainline Protestant and Baptist doctrine. The doctrine of Papal Antichrist is one of the key pillars of the Historicist eschatological school of thought.The late J.A. Wylie lays out a very convincing case that the Roman Papacy is the prophesied antichrist, and not some future man who wil rise to rule the world in tyranny. (I had already come to the conclusion that Daniel's 70th week was fulfilled in the 1st century A.D. and begun to study Historicism before I read Wylie's book).In eighteen brief chapters Wylie, who wrote this book in the second half of the 19th century, gives a point by point indictment of the Roman Papacy. The pope claims to be the Vicar of Christ. this first point, which will astound many, is that vice and anti are basically the same thing. To quote Wylie from Chapter 1, "Antichrist translated into English is Vice-Christ, or Vicar of Christ; and Vicar of Christ, translated into Greek is 'Antichristos'." Think of Vice President or the rank of vice Admiral; they mean in place of, not in opposition to! Modern Christians have been blinded into looking for an open opponent of Christ, not a substitute who claims to rule on Earth in his place! Lay aside all Wylie's other good points, this point itself damns the Papacy.Wylie makes a very good case that just as a false friend tries to pass himself off as a friend- though he is not- the false/antichrist will attempt to pass himself off as a Christian -though he is not. Wylie argues that antichrist will not openly oppose Christ; he argues that antichrist is a fraud who will lead people away from the true Jesus Christ of the Bible into a counterfeit "Christianity".When one has even a basic knowledge of the persecutions of dissenting sects of believers by the Roman Papacy throughout the Middle Ages, the persecutions mentioned in Revelation take on a new light -as being at already least partially fulfilled by the Papacy. As Wylie states, "The same line of proof that establishes that Christ is the promised Messiah, conversely applied, establishes that the Roman system is the predicted apostasy. In the life of Christ we behold the converse of what the Antichrist must be and in the prophecy of Antichrist we are shown the converse of what Christ must be, and was. And when we place the Papacy between the two and compare it with each, we find, on the one hand, that it is the perfect converse of Christ as seen in His life, and, on the other hand, that it is the perfect image of the Antichrist as shown in the prophecy of him".One would have to be ignorant of both the Historicist and Preterist schools of prophetic interpretations and totally indoctrinated into Futurism to not see the logic of Wylie's argument. Regrettably, most present day professing Christians have been totally and exclusively indoctrinate into "dispensational, pre-tribulation, Futurism".This book is very worth reading. This book does not set down a comprehensive system of prophetic interpretation, but it obviously support Historicism. This book destroys what is arguably the key doctrinal position of Futurist prophetic interpretation. I highly recommend this book.

Good author. Appealing recipes. Great ideas to build repertoire for entertaining or potlucks.

Oh, I can't wait to get busy in the kitchen! Perre Coleman Magnus delivers another gorgeous recipe book with beautifully written intros and tempting photos.

It's no secret that southerners love to eat. Most functions and gatherings in the south revolve around food. The rich tradition of southern cooking is showcased in the pages of this book. This cookbook offers 77 recipes for full flavor southern snacks, good for everything from potlucks to tailgating. Many of the recipes are either borrowed from or inspired by southern community cookbooks, home cooks, and chefs who put new twists on southern flavors. Each recipe features a brief introduction, helpful tips, and a history of the dish. Most of the recipes also feature full color photos of the delicious dish. There is also another feature called "sidebars" where the author showcases a staple ingredient or southern tradition. These are sprinkled throughout the book. There's something for every appetite in this fantastic cookbook.The recipes are divided into categories as follows:1. Dips and Spreads2. Cheese, Please3. Deep-Fried Love4. Seafood and Eat It5. The Meat of the Matter6. The Garden Path7. Nuts for Snacks8. LagniappeThe end of the book provides a source for finding ingredients and a complete index of the recipes.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves unique food, particularly food prepared with a southern twist. Perre Coleman Magness certainly knows his Southern dishes as is evident in Southern Snacks. There are a variety of small delicious bite-size recipes in this book along with some wonderful tales to go with them. I loved the story of Hollywood even though I am not a dill pickle fan.The recipes are categorized into groups such as Dips and Spreads; Cheese, Please; Deep-Fried Love; Seafood and Eat It; The Meat of the Matter; The Garden Path; Nuts for Snacks; and Lagniappe. It has been said that here in the South we fry everything, but that chapter is not the longest, but it does have some interesting, mouth-watering recipes such as corn fritters with spicy honey.This is a cookbook that any South cook would be proud to own. Buy it for yourself, then give a copy as a gift.The publisher through Net Galley provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.

Something about southern cooking appeals to almost everyone no matter where in the country they live. When we think of southern food, most of us think of the fat-laden comfort foods like fried chicken or shrimp and grits, but southerners offer appetizers that are just as appealing. Perre Coleman Magness, a veteran cookbook author who specializes in southern food, has outdone herself with her cookbook Southern Snacks: 77 Recipes for Small Bites with Big Flavors. This delightful cookbook is loaded with recipes that will make even the most amateur cook a star at her own party. Just the dips alone at the beginning of the cookbook are reason enough to purchase this cookbook. Magness includes decadent hot dips such as Hot Vidalia Onion Dip (delicious), Mississippi Sin, and Creamy Collard Dip, Pimento Cheese Style, as well as cold dips like the iconic Benedictine, a Kentucky staple, and must-serve dip or spread for fancy sandwiches on Derby Day. Another fabulous and addicting dip is Carolina Caviar.The great snacks don’t end there, however, there are recipes for Fried Grits with Tomato- Bacon Jam, Crab Cake Bites with Artichoke Tartar Sauce, and Beef Tenderloin with Blue Cheese Biscuits and Green Onion Butter. Magness has even included a take on the famous Kentucky Hot Brown.There are photographs of most of the recipes, and the instructions are easy to follow. Most importantly, the recipes turn out picture-perfect. This is one of those cookbooks that belongs on the shelf of anyone who entertains, since it has both quick and easy snacks, and some that are more involved for fancier parties. I loved every recipe I found in SOUTHERN SNACKS ... and there are 77 for “small bites with big flavors!”Adore the colorful design and really pretty photos in this terrific cookbook by Perre Coleman Magness, cook and writer behind the website The Runaway Spoon, which focuses on creative recipes with a Southern slant. Every kind of snack ... for a football game, party, special occasion ... is featured, many inspired by southern community cookbooks, home cooks, and chefs who put new twists on southern flavors. I want the Field Pea Hummus, Sweet Tea Pecans, Louisiana’s Natchitoches Meat Pies, Charleston’s Benne Wafers ... and hey, if I can admit it, the Fried Dill Pickles. Major yum! Along with recipes you’ll find fine Southern stories and lore, just perfect to read while fixin’ up your next Southern Snack.
