Under the Lights I Needed to Escape My Reality CHAPTER 1 WILLA “Hasn’t changed much since you left. Go ahead and unpack. Settle in. I got more work to do up at the house. We’ll go in the morning and get you registered for school,” Nonna said as the pinched frown on her face that had been there since she picked me up at the bus station an hour ago, only grew more intense. “Don’t go nowhere. You hear me? Stay put until I get back.” I managed a nod. I hadn’t been able to say more than “thanks” to her since I’d seen her. The last time I’d seen my nonna was two years ago when she’d saved up enough money to come visit us in Little Rock. She was a large part of my life. There had been times in my childhood that when I thought no one else loved me, I knew she did. Nonna never let me down. Seeing the obvious disappointment in her gaze now was hard to swallow. But I hadn’t expected anything different. It was a look I had gotten used to. I saw it in everyone’s eyes these days when they looked at me. No one believed me. Not my mother, certainly not my stepfather, or the police officer who’d arrested me. Not even my brother. No one. Which meant my nonna wasn’t going to believe me either. Sure she’d agreed to take me in when my mother packed my bags and left them for me on the front porch the day I was released from the correctional center I’d spent the last six months in. I had nowhere to go, and calling my mother’s mother was the only thing I knew to do. I’d lived with Nonna until the summer I turned eleven. Her home was the only real home I’d ever known. My mother had finally decided she could take care of me, the child she’d had at fifteen and left with her mother the day she graduated from high school three years later. When my brother, Chance, had been eight, his father had finally married my mother. She wanted to bring me into the family. Problem was, I never really fit. My younger brother was adored by his father, and I seemed to always be in the way. I kept to myself until I turned fifteen and everything started to change. “Answer me, Willa,” Nonna demanded, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Yes, ma’am,” I replied quickly. I didn’t want to upset her. She was all I had left. Nonna’s expression softened; then she nodded. “Good. I’ll be back soon as my work at the big house is done,” she added, then turned and walked away, leaving me in the bedroom that had been mine for the first eleven years of my life. I had been happy here. I had felt wanted here. But I’d messed that up, too. I was good at messing up. If there was a wrong decision to be made, I managed to make it. I intended to put that in the past. I wanted to get back the girl I had been once. The girl whose grandmother was proud of her. The girl who didn’t act out for attention. The attention I had gotten from my mother hadn’t been the kind of attention I wanted. In the end I’d lost her. She wanted nothing to do with me. I’d killed any love she had for me. Once the door closed behind Nonna, I sank down onto the twin bed that was covered in a quilt I knew my nonna had made herself. She loved quilting in her free time. Which wasn’t very often. She worked six days a week for the Lawtons. They let her off on Sunday so she could go to church and clean her own house. Which happened to be a cottage on the edge of their property. She’d been the Lawtons’ housecleaner and cook for as long as I could remember. My mother had grown up in this house. This room I was in had been hers once too. Even though I’d been the product of a mistake my mother had made, my childhood here had been a happy one. My nonna had given me the love and protection my teenage mother hadn’t known how to give. And then there were the boys. Gunner Lawton and Brady Higgens had been my two best friends. Gunner lived in the big house with his parents and older brother, Rhett. From the time he and Brady had caught me in his tree house playing with his army men when we were four, we had been inseparable. I had been watching the boys for weeks go up into that tree house from my front yard at the cottage. I’d wanted to know what was up there. My curiosity had given me my first real friends. When I had left with my mother, it was at the time things had started to change with all three of us. I wasn’t just one of the guys anymore. I was a girl, and things had begun to get awkward. Back then I had thought I was in love with Brady. He’d been popular and had a smile that once made my heart flutter wildly when directed at me. I thought then he’d be the only boy I’d ever love. I’d left soon after my feelings had started to grow. Now I could hardly remember what either boy looked like. There had been other boys in my life since them. Only one made a mark on me. Only one of them I had loved. Carl Daniels. I thought he’d be my forever. Until he decided that sleeping around with other girls was acceptable when I wouldn’t give him my virginity in the back of his car. He had proven to me that I really couldn’t trust anyone. Loving someone meant getting hurt. My mother and Carl had both shown me how vulnerable love could make you. I wouldn’t make that mistake again. It seemed like another lifetime now. Gunner and Brady were the safe-and-happy part of my past that I often dreamed about at night when I needed to escape my reality. My life here would be very different from the way it had once been. I had made a mistake that I would never truly pay for. The guilt and regret would be my companions throughout my life. And being rejected by your own mother wasn’t easy to accept. It was a wound that went so deep I doubted I’d ever get over it. I stood up and walked over to the mirror and studied myself. My mother’s dark blue eyes looked back at me. The straight blond hair that hit just below my shoulders was nothing like her red locks. I imagined I got my hair color from my father. A man I didn’t know. She would never even tell me his first name. She never even told my nonna. Once she had said it was because he couldn’t be a father to me. She was protecting me and him with her silence. I never understood that. I still didn’t. I reached up and ran my fingers over my bare earlobe. The piercings that once framed my ear were almost all gone now. I’d not been able to wear them in the correctional center. I had gotten used to not having to deal with them, and I didn’t desire to put them back. Even without them, I was so different from the girl who had left here six years ago.

3 stars — Well shoot. I can honestly say that I didn’t have as much success with this book. While there were things that I enjoyed, there were just too many other things that bugged me for it to be an enjoyable overall read. I’ll try not to get too ranty, but I do want to express the things that weren’t to this reader’s personal liking. I kind of noticed this in the first book, but it appears that Ms. Glines likes to ride the line for me…maybe for many. And depending on where that line is for you personally, she might go over it or she might not. In the first book she definitely rode my line, but I gave her a pass on a few things hoping that they weren’t going to be trends, as well as the fact that there was so much ELSE that I loved about the book…make sense? Anyways, in this book Ms. Glines fell right over my personal line, on a few issues.OK, first things first, I don’t think I really paid attention to the blurb, I just got it when it was on sale because it was in the series and I crossed my fingers I was going to like the series. But if I had paid closer attention to the blurb, I might have been more leery. I’m not usually a fan of love triangles. It takes a VERY SPECIAL author to make that OK for me. Now, honestly? This wasn’t actually a bad love triangle. At least in terms of leading people on, potentially cheating, or falling in love with both choices and one getting hurt. So all the normal things that make a love triangle icky for me actually weren’t there. But I also didn’t see the point. I felt like the story would have actually been STRONGER without it taking up so much space in the narrative. I already knew which boy she would end up with, b/c I had seen who book 3 was going to be about. And so having a good number of chapters from (spoilers?) Brady’s POV actually just made me dislike Brady…which is a bummer. He was a dick to Ivy, hearing him call himself a good guy while he’s being an jerk did not endear himself to me. And I wasn’t impressed with his feelings for Willa. I will admit, that he at least had a mini growth spurt at the end of the book in how he supported Gunner, but now I’m not sure how he’s going to redeem himself in general. Course, I’m still curious.As for the two characters that *should* have had most of the focus, let’s start with Gunner. He had a pretty crap situation, but the more I learned, the more over the top the whole thing became, and the more detached I became from him. There were many opportunities for me to feel for him and what he was going through, and I just…didn’t really. Or least not enough. I didn’t see as much growth as I would have liked from him…I didn’t see his caring, I didn’t see these redeeming qualities that Willa and Nonna saw. He was a terrible friend really, he treated women horribly, and he had zero coping mechanisms. I get that how he grew up shaped him, but I needed to see something more to fall in love with him. And I just didn’t. I didn’t hate him, but I didn’t feel for him nearly as much as I think I was supposed to. I will admit that he made me laugh sometimes though.Then there’s Willa. I felt glimmers of attachment to her too, but then they kind of went nowhere as well. Maybe because the story was split between 3 characters, I didn’t get as much time in her head? I did feel for what her mother did to her, and I did feel for the tragedy she went through, but I had a major personal beef with that whole storyline that I think it prevented me from going all in with Willa as well. And really, there just wasn’t much about her personality that we got to see. She had some funny one-liners, but I just don’t really know what she was like.I know I was supposed to love Nonna, but I just didn’t…I didn’t hate her or anything, but I was disappointed in the way she treated Willa. I guess it’s human, after what she went through with Willa’s Mom, but having raised Willa for so much of her life, you would think Willa would have earned some trust. Half the time Nonna understood that Willa was nothing like her mother, and she would say nice things…and the other half…well, I don’t know. There just felt like opportunities missed there.And before I get onto spoilery things, the major thing that’s proving to be a problem in this series is that other than the female main characters in BOTH stories, there are NO OTHER good female characters. I get that it’s a small town, but really? The way the other girls are described are such stereotypical mean girl/slut-shaming stuff, it’s so ridiculously disappointing…and not to make a judgement call (though I guess I am making one), but it feels like lazy writing. Also, it really does not paint any of these boys in a great light with the way they treat the girls in their school. I was not impressed by this in the first book, and we just got to see even more of it here. NOT A FAN.OK, the next 2 things are spoilery, so skip the rest if you don’t want to be spoiled.I have a HUGE personal beef with the way Willa’s tragedy was represented. I absolutely HATE that people still view pot as worse than alcohol, and the evil of all evils. I don’t care if you have a problem with it AS LONG as you also have a problem with alcohol. Because, let’s be real: alcohol is just as bad if not worse than pot. So when you write a book where all of the teenagers are hanging out drinking every weekend, and it appears that they occasionally drink and drive, and it’s not looked upon in a negative way, and there are NO CONSEQUENCES to this whatsoever…and then you make it so that when Willa and her friends are drinking and smoking pot, and a child dies, and you lightly touch on the drinking, but focus heavily on the smoking as the reason they were inattentive “because pot makes it so you don’t care about anything”…Grrr NO. NO. NO NO NO. I’m not saying that I think teenagers should be smoking pot…or drinking alcohol. But stop pushing this kind of propaganda, it’s not helping teens make responsible choices. The tragedy would have happened if all they’d been doing is drinking alcohol. FOR REALZ. It’s about irresponsibility. Sorry, it just pisses me off when people are fine with alcohol abuse, but see pot as the devil drug. God. Sorry, rant rant rant.Also, as a side note? I wasn’t super happy with the way some of the other little things were addressed in this book either: like the suicide, or believing someone about rape.The OTHER thing is that ending!! WTF??? Nothing was resolved!! That was not a complete book! What happens next?? Geez, that’s not cool.OK, so now that I’ve let out all my negative emotions, I’m going to shock the crap out of you guys. I’m probably going to read the next book. I want Brady to get the chance to redeem himself (and I hope he does), and I’m super curious about Riley. But we’ll see which side of my line Ms. Glines stays on…I’ll be bummed if she crosses it again, b/c I’m most looking forward to Nash’s book, but what are you gonna do? At least they read fast.

In the second installment of The Field Party Series by Abbi Glines we meet Willa who has returned to Lawton after being gone for six years and is dealing with some demons. She's back and trying to keep to herself, but her best friends from childhood Brady and Gunner refuse to let her isolate herself. All grown up and seniors in high school the three of them are learning that their friendship from all those years ago is still as strong, but some things are different.Willa was sent to live with her Nonna, the only one who ever really cared about her, after being thrown out of her parents house. As the story progresses we learn why, and it's tragic and breaks your heart. Willa has a lot of healing to do in this story, and with the help of one of these boys she is finally able to forgive herself and start to learn to accept what happened in her past, but it's a long road.Watching Willa struggle with her feelings both past and present with Brady and Gunner is frustrating at times. Brady and Gunner both want Willa but don't know how to deal with it. They both have a bond with her, and that bond didn't change even with all the years they spent apart. They were inseparable growing up now that they are all together again, things get complicated. You will root for one of these guys to win Willa over more so than the other, just because they fit more so than the other does. That boy also has his own story to tell, and it's just as messed up as Willa's.This was an angsty and dramatic story that had me hooked till the end, but it ended quite abruptly for my liking and left me with quite a few questions. The epilogue was also in the past instead of the future which is usually ok, but since there was so many unanswered questions I wasn't feeling how this book ended. I did enjoy Willa's story, and also seeing characters from the previous book as well. I'm hoping in the next book some questions will be answered as I have become attached to these characters and need to know what happened!Overall this was a good read, but there was too many things that were left open ended for me. Willa's story was sad, yet beautiful and full of laughs, tears, and forgiveness. If you're looking for a Young Adult/New Adult book that isn't full of craziness and backstabbing, I do suggest adding this one to your TBR list today.

This had a rocky start for me, but got much better as we learned more about the characters. I am pretty excited about the set up for the next book too.Things I liked*I immediately wanted to hug Willa. We are not sure what she did, but it was something that she was very remorseful for, and something her mother abandoned her (again) for. She wanted to make better choices, do well in school, and make her grandmother proud. When I found out what Willa had been dealing with, my heart broke right open.*Gunner really won me over, when he started being real. In the beginning of the book, I sort of thought he was a jerk, with his love-em-and-leave-em attitude towards women and locker room talk, but then he started shedding this "armor", and what was left was someone with a lot of repressed pain. I was really happy that Willa coming back to town, prompted Brady to renew his friendship with Gunner as they both rekindled their friendship with Willa.*Willa's Grandmother is tucked in my heart with all the other fab grandmas I have been reading about lately and with my own. She was a really special lady, with a huge heart filled with so much love.*I cannot lie, the drama in this one was so soap opera worthy, and I loved it!I love friends-to-more stories, and am also a fan of second chance romances, so this was a solid read for me. It also got better as the story progressed, and I was pleased with where Glines took the story by the end of the book.

This has been incredibly useful and I will refer to it often. I would recommend this book for anyone traveling to Saudi!

I thought many of the examples in the book are blown out of proportion. As such they enflamed rather than informed the prospective traveler to Saudi Arabia. The cartoons seem to promote stereotypes of Arabs that are derogatory. I threw the book out before I entered Saudi Arabia. I did not want anyone to think I'd taken such a book seriously.

I cannot recommend this eBook version of a classic textbook - it is full of errors. Most equations appear as images, but some seem to have been rewritten or OCR'ed because they appear in a different, crisper font. The problem is that I found plenty of errors in these equations: derivatives (primes) appear where there shouldn't be any, plus signs change to equal signs, and so on. (I verified this with a print edition from the library.) The eBook is therefore completely unusable for the research scientist - do not buy!Also, the digital version did not have any page numbers, despite the statement, found on the product page, that "In this edition, page numbers are just like the physical edition" - not true, beware!

This was a Father's Day gift for my dear husband. He was really happy to get this. Dear Hubs is a scientist so this is fun reading for him.

Useful for people that work with scattered light from many types of scattering particles. Good for a summary and equation viewpoint, less useful if you want a deep derivation.

Highly recommended!!!

okay, this book is highly utilized by a great deal of people in the field, but i find the book lacking in readability. It generalizes far too much. It gives too little detail. It reminds me of an outline for a scattering text book. It is a reference text in the truest sense of the word. It's obvious intent is a reminder for those who already know the information, but it is so generalized...it alone is not very useful for the student learning scattering.

Classic!! Thorough!! Really nothing more to say about this book.If you decided to buy this book, then I'm sure you already know what this book is about and how classic it is.Help me a lot for understanding and programming for the Mie scattering.

This is a thorough, full-length guide to Vienna and beyond. However, I preferred the Pocket Guide Rick Steves Pocket Vienna to take with me while traveling in the city.This guide has a lot of in-depth information and is useful when in the "planning phase" a few months before your trip. You can read articles about culture, history, and get a feel for the must-see sights of the city. It also has a lot of helpful transportation and "getting to" advice for planning your route and transportation between various cities and sights.However, it is the size of a medium paperback book, and is therefore difficult to carry with you while traveling. You would have to keep it in a purse or backpack. This is not a huge drawback, however it is also complex and cumbersome to look up information or guidance when you need it. While in Vienna, I found myself pulling out my pocket guide and map often while walking to make sure I was headed in the right direction or find a good nearby restaurant. This would have been impossible to do with the full-size guide. This is the kind of guide that you read at home or while in your hotel room at night, not one that you take with you. As such, if you had to pick one guide I would definitely recommend the pocket guide over this one. It's not that the content of this book is bad, but rather that I prefer to travel light and be able to access the information that I want quickly and conveniently. Also, it's much more manageable to read a 150p small pocket book on the flight over to europe compared with this sizeable guide.Hope this review helps!

Before I went to Austria and Tirol area this summer I bought two books to help me plan the trip; the other one being Lonely Planet Austria. I found Rick Steve's far more helpful, and I followed a lot of suggestions in this book and I had a most rewarding vacation. Rick warned of ZTL zone parking restictions (where you will automatically ticketed) in Bolzano, but until you get there it is not easy to understand it's importance and consequence of the violations just by a simple statement in the book.

In June 2013 I spent six days in Austria (Vienna and Salzburg). If your time in Austria is as limited as mine was, this book is very useful. It helps readers focus on the best sites and navigate their way around. Thanks to Rick Steves' recommendation, I found my day trip to Hallstatt to be very worthwhile. It is very picturesque. The museum is good but overpriced (as the book says). Hallstatt is an easy trip from Salzburg.A few tips: - The Mozart-Strauss concert at Palais Palfry is not a tourist trap (I get the feeling that some Vienna concerts are just that). - If you can only get standing room for the Lipizzaners, get to the riding school at least 20 minutes early. Find a place at the top level near a radiator. Use the radiator and wall for support. The view is good. I was able to get SRO tickets one day before the show, but try to reserve a seat earlier. They all have good views. Nobody will complain if you take some photos. - Mozart's residence in Salzburg is overrated. Its video is good but most of the rest of the display consists of portraits reputed to be of Mozart with analysis of which ones are genuine. - The best bratwurst I ever ate is available at a beer garden called Cafe-Restaurant. It shares a building with a souvenir shop next to St. Peter's cemetary near the funicular entrance (it isn't mentioned in the book). The pomme frites are excellent, too.To avoid redundancy, Steves only covers what he considers to be the best and most representatives locations. An example is Hallstatt for the Salzkammergut. I wish he would provide capsule summaries of other places like Bad Ischl and the Grossglockner to help readers determine if they are worthwhile.Naturally, Steves has to bring his politics into it. He justfiably expresses concerns about a racist political party. But then he goes on to claim that except for the Nazi occupation, Vienna has been controlled by tolerant "people-oriented" socialists for the past 80 years. Here he displays his ignorance on non-travel topics. Every political party is "people-oriented." They can't win by being vegetable or mineral oriented. The Nazis were socialists themselves, so socialist control has been unbroken since the early 1930s. Finally, most historians believe that Hitler picked up his extreme anti-Semitism while living in Vienna.Ignore that one paragraph and the rest of the book is helpful.

Very helpful guide that even provides bus/train times and stops to make planning easy. We were able to get around Vienna, Salzburg and even a couple one off stops in the middle using this book. Aside from renting a car for the one day to make a couple stops when going from Vienna and Salzburg we got around on buses. This book was a huge help in figuring out how to get around.

I initially borrowed this book from the library for basic research, weeks before my trip. However, it was so chock full of excellent information and amazing recommendations, I bought it to have in hand during my vacation...and this is coming from a die-hard kindle/ebook convert. I'm trying to keep this relatively brief, so here are the highlighted book recs, in no particular order:-prioritizing sights/activities in all locations: one salt mine is enough for a lifetime, y'all-lodging recs: we stayed in pensions mostly, and although many of Steve's listed properties were full, ownership would direct us to a similarly priced, amazing alternative in the same neighborhood (Austrians are the best!)-citypass type purchases: very few are worth it, and this book saved us that money. However, the ViennaPass worked for our goals. Research Vienna and the pass and make your call.-Viennese Wine: I would never have found out about Heurigers without this book. A true highlight of Vienna for wine lovers!Only caveat: Don't follow any guidebook's schedule/recs to the letter, follow your tastes. This guidebook formed an AMAZING foundation of my trip, but my group and I wanted to spend more time outdoors than in museums, so we did 3 nights in the Salzkammergut lake district and only 2 each in Vienna/Salzburg.Happy trails!

Typical Haynes quality. To keep costs low, it is printed on rather poor quality paper and photos are all black and white and very dark and grainy. However, text is well written and laid out, diagrams appear well labeled. Good specification sheets. Year to year changes as well as UK and North American model differences are called out.

I've never been a fan of reverse engineered automotive manuals. That being said it does make a nice companion to a factory manual, because of the actual photographs. Although Haynes manuals are geared to weekend hobby "mechanics" they can still get you in over your head if you do not have a bit of experience with the car you are working on to begin with.My recommendation? Skip this one and go for a Factory Manual, then perhaps reconsider the Haynes Manuals later for the pictures.

This book is an absolute MUST HAVE for anyone who loves desserts and loves to bake. As a former pastry chef myself, I have well over 200 cookbooks, and this is one of the most well-written, best-tested baking books I own. As a matter of fact, I can only say that about 2 other books I have. I have made about 90% of the desserts in this book, and they have all turned out exactly like Chef Medrich describes and look exactly like the photos. How many baking books can you say that about? I can't begin to count the number of people that I have recommended this book to.If you buy Cocolat for no other reason you should buy it for the "Building Blocks" in the back. If you have that section and follow her directions exactly, you will be able to create an endless number of incredible desserts. Chef Medrich's genoise formula, for example, is the most reliable formula for genoise I've ever used. That is a staple in my kitchen, along with her formula and method for french buttercream. And frankly, her formula for Chocolate Velvet Mousse is worth the price of the book all on its own. I use it for everything; filling for every type of cake, mixed with whipped cream for fillings for cream puffs, layered with sponge cake for chocolate trifle; I could go on and on. In my opinion, it's the finest chocolate mousse both in texture and flavor that I've ever eaten.Marcel Desaulnier markets himself as the King of Chocolate, but he can't even begin to compare with Alice Medrich, who is in a class all by herself.Chef Medrich, if you read this, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! You and Emily Luchetti are my baking mentors; you are a great chef and teacher.

this was a gift hard to find. so imagine the hugh surprise for the receiver. they are very happy with the book. pictures are big and beautiful.and the instructions seem easy enough to follow. Just glad that I made someone so happy. the book arrived in excellent condition on time and was packaged very well. will definitely order from again need be in the future.

I not only have this book but also have Alices book, Cookies and Brownies. Her recipes are wonderful, from there taste to there beauty! The instruction in the book is easy to follow. I would recommend this to anyone that loves chocolate (Who Doesn't) One of the other reviews on this book stated that she must have used a machine to make the chocolate ruffles. I was lucky enough to attend a class at Sur La Table (an excellent cookware store) the instructor was Alice herself! We learned exactly how to make the beautiful ruffles by hand. It was not hard and they turned out beautiful. Like with any good cookbook you have to read the instruction carefully. With a little bit of practice the ruffle technique can be done beautifully. You will impress your family and friends with your creations from using this wonderful book. I would recommend highly to anyone wanting to learn about chocolate.

This is one of the premier chocolate dessert cookbooks of all time and it is very disappointing it is out of print. Alice Medrich is a phenomenal pastry chef (there is a good reason she is known as the First Lady of Chocolate) and she does not disappoint with this book. The recipes are absolutely divine. What really sets this cookbook apart from others is the fact there is a picture of the finalized product next to the recipe. It is so much easier to cook from a recipe when you can see what the finished product will look like. A must have!

I used this cookbook back in 1996 to learn about using chocolates in dessert recipes. I learned more about chocolate from this cookbook than any other I've ever seen. If you want to learn about chocolate, buy this cookbook to buy! BTW... the desserts contained on Cocolat are absolutely delicious and using this book and following the easy directions, most anyone can turn-out Five-Star quality desserts! A person only needs to take it slow and easy; carefully read the directions AND the 'notes' (when available) if they're not an experienced baker. Alice Medrich has excellently made the craft of dessert-making (as in a 'pastry chef') a very easy experience; again, just take your time and read the directions and notes! (Sometimes, your end product may not be perfect, but time and experience will take care of that! Good baking to ya!!!!!

I bought this cookbook when it first came out and the recipes are fabulous. This book meets my criteria for a great cookbook- it has recipes that turn out superbly - with the bonus that the picures in the book look as beautiful as the products taste. I feel lucky when I get 2 or 3 good recipes out of a book but all of the ones in this book have turned out so far. You don't have to be a professional chef...just a careful reader, planner and follower of directions.My original copy was lost and I went into sticker shock when I saw the price of replacing it now that it is out of print. Oh well..it is worth it.
