I love this book. It's been a huge help to me and my recovery from addiction. There are quotes that start every devotional thought that are very inspirational points of view from not just Christian thoughts. The devotionals have so much wisdom and insight that one needs to recover from their addiction. Take time to soak these in through times of prayer with you Higher Power and know that thee is hope for you. The end of the devotionals have a perfect summary of what you just read. It's been extremely helpful for me to write these affirmation down on a 3x5 card to remember what inspired me about the devotional. This book is must have for anyone in recovery and contains hope for a better life and renewed sense of self image and lots of encouragement that you are not alone in this struggle.

My first copy of this book is showing signs of being read almost daily for the past five years. I wanted another copy on hand for when the first copy started falling apart from being used so much.

I honestly think that every person in America should read this book. There's more truth in it about how we objectify each other and how falsely we perceive relationship in this book than many others I've read, and it's a daily sort of meditation on helpful, healthy, healing truths.

Great meditation book for addicts and nonaddicts alike. I have been reading it every morning. Some of the messages are very profound and thought provoking.

Inspirational for single-life or a relationship. A way to grow daily. The lessons based on a higher power are not always helpful, though it follows the 12 steps. Still very distilled wisdom packed to up your mood and self morale.

Lots of wisdom and uplifting words in this book even if i have not always been ready to recieve it. Recommend it as a good book for recovering sex addicts or any addiction for that matter. Chicken soup for the soul.

GREAT MEDITATION BOOK

I am in a number of fellowships. A recovery friend of mine recommended this book. It's great. It has short but meaningful recovery messages that I can use at any given moment. It's also small enough to fit in my bag so that I can have it wherever and whenever I need it.

I received this book in the mail weeks ago. I had watched the movie first, had a range of emotions at the end that entailed shock, sadness, anger, resentment, and eventually acceptance...Thought I would order the book because books can lend so much more detail and backstory that a movie simply cannot.I love reading. I have read many different genres, and have even slugged away through Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series... and I thought Robert Jordan enjoyed his descriptions! But Robert Jordan's world was such that even though many passages and even in one case, an entire book were laborious to get through, I still re-read those books and have every single one of them.I have to say that usually when I get a new book, I finish it within a week, no matter how long it is. If it is really good, I will devour it in a few days.Well, it has been weeks that I have had this book and I haven't yet made it past part one. The part of the book I am currently on is where everyone has just gone out to search for the twins.I enjoy descriptions and feeling as though I am a part of the world the reader is trying to describe, but this novel is TOO wordy.So many adjectives and my eyes glaze over. Especially since I don't feel emotionally invested in really any of the characters because there is too much about everything else!When I read two pages about the sunset, all of it's colors, then in turn all of the colors it is turning the trees, leaves, and the surrounding areas and how if the character had just stood up and contorted their body in just the right way, then they would see these things that have just been described to me in full detail, I have a hard time really getting into the book.When there is so much description about the surroundings that several pages later the plot has not progressed, I start to think of other things I should or could be doing. And this is hard for me to admit, because I love reading.Reading should be an escape to another world where you don't have the voice in the back of your mind telling you about mundane household chores you should be doing!Sadly, though I want to like this book so rich in detail, it has too much detail. I will finish it, as I don't like to leave any book unfinished, but it will likely take quite some time, as I will read other books to take my mind off of the odious task of finishing Atonement.I will not be checking out anything else from this author.

I was completely absorbed by this book. The first part draws you into a confined setting, a very hot day in a country house and the preparations for welcoming the son of the house who is about to arrive with a friend. It lets you see the scene from the perspectives of the different characters in the house. Although McEwan focuses more on the internal lives of the characters than on external events, and devotes most of the attention to their impressions and reflections on what takes place around them, you feel the tension building steadily towards what certainly must become a disaster. The second part describes the dire consequences of these events, which grow out of the lively imagination of a young girl who half sees and half imagines what is happening in the house and tries, with good intentions, to put things right. McEwan ties everything together beautifully and elegantly in the last part where the young girl has grown old and has spent all the intervening years trying to reconcile herself with what she did as a child. I don't want to spoil anyone's reading experience by giving details. The book was rather different from what I had expected based on the descriptions, but it is certainly one of the better books that I have read. It is warmly recommended.

I found parts of the book heartbreaking, truly difficult to read. I enjoyed the author's lyrical writing very much. The words often were those I imagine Briony would have used. The book also taught life lessons, the least of which is to not speak about things you don't know or understand.

This was one of those novels I found brilliantly written, but incredibly boring.I had, probably, expectations way to high, so I was very disappointed with the book. It drags for an insufferable amount of time and when it comes to the big revelation it amounted to nothing. It works better in the movie, but even then, it had no impact in me.There are, of course, things that I liked and left me torn regarding the rating I would give this book. I loved the use that Ian McEwan makes of language. The way he masters long sentences, which is not very common in English language. I liked the idea of the different views of the same fact by the different characters and the way that propels the narrative, but I also thought that, in general, the book ended up being quite boring and excessively descriptive.

I've seen the movie a half dozen times and in between read the book twice. The movie experience has increased in emotional impact with each viewing. I first read the book a couple of years ago in paperback. I've just finished reading it a second time on Kindle. The Kindle reading was much better, taking notes, ranting about this and that was a pleasure missing in the book reading.The second reading completely overwhelmed me emotionally, it's difficult for me to say anything definitive. In the back of my mind lurked Rashoman, King Lear, Oedipus, Romeo and Juliet. And always there was opacity, a lack of clarity that added to the grief, compounded the tragedy. The novel within a novel only made things more horrific. It's all so thin, standing over the grave imploring the power of the almighty, so, so thin. But it's all we have, all Briony had.

I became aware of Ian McEwan through You Tube. He delivered the commencement address at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.His address was on free speech and impressed me. So, I decided to read one of his books, and chose Atonement. It was a good choice. The story took awhile to gain traction for me. However, I am an experienced enough reader to know a slow starter can turn out to be worth being patient which proved to be the case. Atonement is perfectly in step with the rich British literary tradition.

I really enjoyed this calendar planner in 2018, so i bought a 2019 one also. It's 18 months... i only wish they divided the 6 month's 3-3, as it starts July of the previous year... which is silly, cause that's past by the time I get a new journal.

Love it. Not a lot of space to write. But will definitely serve the purpose I am using it for, which is tracking seed progress and marking planting dates. Illustrations are good.

This is my second year to use OFA gardening journal and I love it! Good quality print, ease of use with being spiral bound, and filled with so many useful tips and schedules. Definitely worth ordering!

The development of her characters is nothing short of genius, as the reader surly has a well-liked family like this living just down the road.I recommend this interesting and well written novel not just to those living below the Mason Dixon Line but to anyone who knows living isn't always pretty.

A fun, funny glimpse into one family's secrets, quirks and personalities. Beautifully told from multiple perspectives. It's also the rare Lee Smith novel that ends happily!

As usual I loved it! I have never not liked a book she wrote. The stories are about a culture that is so far from mine and I love reading about it.

Lee Smith is so real! Her writing sends me home!

I enjoyed this story so much, it is suspenseful and keeps the reader wondering, I would recommend it, even though it has some sad undertones.

Any valid bio of Robbins would have to result in a narrative of the development of dance and musical theatre in America, since the 1940s. While Jowitt gives us the, often sad, milestones in this man's life, her major thrust throughout this long and always exciting book is on his work. She delves into virtually every creation of his, including his generally poorly received occasional forays into non-musical theatre. Detailed attention is given to both concept, creation and execution of his prolific endeavors. Her in depth analysis of each of his works, often quite technical, VIVIDLY recall many great performances of these masterpieces.While not necessarily for those with a casual interest in dance, the facts of his life, as well as the cavalcade of his shows and ballets, makes for a read that is always more than just factual. Interestingly, Jowitt seems never to editorialize on Robbins' work. But then again, why attempt to laud a universally acclaimed genius ?

Great book and in really good condition.

This book is horrible. I really don’t understand why it has so many 5 star reviews. If I could give it zero I would. I’m a fan of Jerome Robbins so it shouldn’t be this hard to read but it’s nearly impossible especially considering there’s a ton of rambling information that isn’t about Jerome Robbins himself. This 516 page book had no business being that long and really didn’t need to be. I have to read this for a class but at this point I’m just skimming it and highlighting things because reading it is not only a bore, but also a waste of time that I don’t have to spare. If I were Jerome Robbins I would be so disappointed that this were a “biography” about me.

Excellent biography of Jerry Rabinowitz, who as Jerome Robbins, shone brilliantly as dancer and then creator of dance, both for Broadway and Dance stages until his death at age 80. Given the difference in audience size, he is most likely best to be remembered for his theater work and its reproduction in Hollywood films than for his ballet work centered in the Old City Center and New Lincoln Center buildings in New York City. (As the author points out, his perfectionist approach to filming dance lost him his chance to direct his own work in Hollywood...put more precisely, he was fired while working on his first assignment there.)I cannot compare this with other of the several biographies available since I have not read them. I can say that this will tell you all that the average reader wants to know about the choreographer, his career and personal life. She has had access to his voluminous personal records as well as many others relevant to his life and work. Many co-workers, friends (and enemies) have been interviewed and the published material scoured as well. One of the reviewers found her writing quite repellent, I did not. The author writes clearly and balances his virtues with his uncanny ability to behave so as to alienate even a Saint. He was an anxious perfectionist, as she portrays him, and also had an ungovernable temper, easily touched off by almost anything done by those whose work he supervised as well as by collaborators in his various endeavors. Extensive but intermittent psychoanalysis presumably led to some of the self-understanding manifest in his diary and letters, but understanding, unfortunately, never insuresself control. On specific issues, such as his naming names in his testimony as a former communist, she is fair in conveying both his motivations (as best they can be captured) and his sense of guilt over his actions. At any rate, the book has about 500 pages of text, details of his life, and his creative process in action to give us a fair idea of the person. No book can replace personal association in intimate circumstances but there is enough here to convey a general understanding of the man and his work....allowing the limitations of any biography.In sum, despite its length, my interest never flagged. I commend the book to any general reader seeking to know the man behind some of the best dance that Broadway, the Ballet stage and Hollywood, had to offer us during his working lifetime.

The biggest difference between success and failure when you face good players is defense, most especially with the opening lead, and this book focuses on leads - and understanding your partner's lead - as the foundation of good defense. Consider that most people at this level pay $10-$20 or more per masterpoint (ouch! we never look at it that way, do we?), the $20 here should quickly result in more than one masterpoint gained. Read it with your partner(s).

This is the most amazing bridge book for teaching I have ever used for my classes. Eddie Kantar is not only a great bridge player, he has written a fantastic book on defense. The information is clear and concise. Each concept is explained in detail and includes an example. Never before have I ever insisted my students purchase a bridge book. In this case, I required all students to buy the book and suggested to some of my partners who, by the way have over 8-10,000 masterpoints to read Kantar's book. Defense is the most difficult to play and to learn. Eddie Kantar made both easy. (I almost never review books I use) .............arlene port

I play with with several partners, not only one. I need to learn more about how to play defense, but it needs to be how to play defense with several partners, including playing with a new person for the first time. So, when I encountered "jack denies" and "the standard lead is the 10, however I suggest that you lead the 9." I wished Kantar had left the non-standard defense for a later chapter.I really need a book about standard defense, not stuff that needs a special partnership agreement.

Wow – this book contains so much wonderful information. I read the first two chapters. Then I put it down for a while and went back to it and reread the first two chapters. I keep reminding myself that half the time you will be a defender – and it can even be more difficult then being declarer when you have knowledge of two hands. I read the book a little bit at a time. I am hoping to absorb most of the techniques in here. Thanks so much.

A great book for defense technical tactics.Whereas most books strive for various common strategic defensive situations, this book is different. It strives to give you and your partner the best agreements of when to signal attitude, count, and suit preference. I learned several things I didn't know before, and I've been playing this game for over 40 years. Great on opening lead conventions, signals, and a lot of rules of thumb about when to cover and when not to, which is great because you need to do these things quickly and in tempo. This book will improve the bridge defense of virtually every player out there.

This book has improved my game more than any other.
