DIANE COOK and LEN JENSHEL are two of America's foremost landscape photographers. Their work has been published in numerous magazines including National Geographic, Conde Nast Traveler, Audubon, The New Yorker, and Fortune. They have also published numerous fine art books of their photographs, including Travels in the American West, HOT SPOTS: America's Volcanic Landscape, and AQUARIUM. The recipients of numerous fellowships, their work has been exhibited in more than 100 museums and collections worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Yokohama Museum in Tokyo. SUSAN TYLER HITCHCOCK has written 16 nonfiction books ranging in genre from literary history to nature guide to family memoir. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Virginia and, as senior editor at National Geographic Books, oversees the science, health, and nature list. What a disappointment compared to other photo books National Geographic has published! Most of the photos were ones found in other NG books but the quality of the print/copy in so many of the photos was sub-par. Many looked like color Xerox prints instead of the fine quality I usually associate with NG books. Just because they were 'night' photos doesn't mean they were good photos. Save your money.

One of the best purchases I've made on Amazon. Bought this as a gift for a friend's birthday.The photographs are exceptional and varied. Even with very low light, the pictures are mind blowing.Worth the price.

Gave the book to a disabled friend for Christmas. He said he loved the photos but the book was very heavy. Never considered that when I purchased. He just is not as strong as he once was...

Jasmine Walt is very good at finishing one plot, and going straight into another that you just want to get the next book ASAP to know what is going on.In the last book. the Chief Mage decided to make Naya his apprentice, as well as discovering the corruption and issues his new city has been hiding and has been taking actions to fix them. The Chief Mage has given Naya additional tasks, along with her training to keep her busy, but not to pay for her apartment that she has stubbornly chose to occupy outside of the palace. Bound by Magic is the exciting continuation of Burned by Magic, and picks up pretty much exactly where the first book left off. Sunaya Baine, a hot-headed, overly emotional, and impulsive shifter works to balance her new responsibilities to the Chief Mage while still keeping up with the silver murder investigations. Her friends seek (who are also well written, with their own strengths) support her in her quest, even though her loyalties are extending towards mages, who rule over the other races in the Northia Federation. Walt's take on shifters and mages isn't entirely run-of-the-mill, and the racial tensions between characters kept this urban fantasy fresh and new. The chemistry between Sunaya and The Chief Mage is palpable, but there's still a great deal of unresolved sexual tension that I expect will make the future books rather exciting.

Jasmine Walt has done IT again in her latest book! By it, I mean created literary magic for the human mind! I love a well built world, and the world building continues to be phenomenal. This series is definitely an urban fantasy. The level of writing is on a similar level as Ilona Andrews (a high level comparison), although Jasmine Walt has her own brand and style of writing. I found the imagery often building pictures or movies in my head, just the right amount of detailed descriptions to build the scene, characters, and action. The characters are believable, and the main character is sassy, independent, and not afraid to take action!I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the first book of this series. Highly recommended!Thanks to the author providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have to say I really enjoyed this book but at the same time I was a little disappointed.The rhythm is fast paced and there is plenty of action but it fell short for me in the characters development part (It actually felt that there was only action in the book).I was really looking forward to see the evolution of Sunnaya and Iannis relationship and to see if they would grow to work more as a team but it is still felt that there was actually no relationship between the two of them or that it was rather stifled (I am not even speaking on a romantic point of view but just as two fellow persons who interact on a regular basis).Iannis still seems too one dimensional for me at the moment.Sunnaya's relations with other people in general seem under-developed in general and I hope to see her evolving more on this point in the next book.There seem to be something going on with Larkin and I really really hope that nothing will come out of it as I definitely loathe love triangles.All in all in it is as solid book with some flaws, but I'll definitely be reading the next one (although I hope that it won't be one of those series that drag on for 10 books before things wraps up).

Being the apprentice to the Chief Mage may sound exciting but it comes with all the boring tasks that the mages don't want to do themselves. Luckily, Sunaya still has her Enforcer badge along with the danger that job entails. After Iannis gives her leave to investigate missing shifters during her off-time, she finds a much more tangled web of deceit weaving throughout the shifter community. Will Sunaya be able to help the very community that distrusts and hates her on sight because she's half mage and half shifter?

Having met the author in her Shadow series I was intrigued to read the beginning of this one. I found that while the heroine was similar, in certain respects there was a completely different and intriguing World in which she functioned. I have thoroughly enjoyed her adventures and I found this book as well as the whole series to be most interesting and at times, quite enthralling. One of the things I like best is that the plot unfolds in a good way without excessive violence in interesting settings. Lots of fun!

This is such a terrific book, and I hope Tuttle publishes another, more advanced one to make this a series. The stories are excellent, and each one builds off of vocabulary learned in previous stories. This allows for familiarity through repetition with it feeling rote and mindless. The font is clean and although it is a bit small for older eyes, the bright white pages and crisp, clean text provide enough contrast that the characters are easy to read. The comprehension questions start off mostly in English (and are easy), and become progressively more difficult as the lessons progress. Lessons 3 through 28 offer the question in both English and Hangul, and from lesson 29 on they are written only in Hangul. Pre-reading questions and Writing activities are included in most lessons. That said, if you are not using this book in tandem with a language tutor, you'll need to use this as a supplement to other resources, as there are a couple of things missing.First, careful students will notice similar phrases repeated at the end of most sentences (such as 입니다). There is nothing in the book that discusses what they are or what the translation is; it is left up to the student to research them on their own. I find it strange that there is an included glossary of common phrases (and even Hangul pronunciation) but not a list of formal style verb forms (one of which is the aforementioned 입니다). Second (and also relevant to 입니다) is that the pronunciation on the included CD sounds like the speaker is using the more casual form (for example, 니다) in places, regardless of the polite form written in the lesson. Overall, these phrases are used all the time in Korean, so the omission of such a list is glaring. Puzzling these out on your own, however, will likely sear them into your brain for good.And speaking of the CD, be aware that while the lessons have been recorded by a native speaker, she is speaking as if to students and not to other Korean speakers. That means that vowel sounds are far more drawn out than they would otherwise be, so you will need to learn how to quicken your syllables when speaking or you will sound like a child. :) It would have been nice if they could have also recorded the stories at a normal conversational pace, but it's not going to hurt your skills any to not have this available.Other than those relatively minor issues, this is a fantastic book that will take you far, as long as you are willing to put in the required effort. Do not rush the lessons; make sure you are comfortable with the important vocabulary before moving on and you will do well. 화이팅!

A good, progressive collection of Korean stories with English translation and vocabulary. Builds from the very simple to the more complex, and the "training wheels" make it pretty straightforward to move through the tales effectively. I find it useful to be able to see the language used in integrated, story format, in contrast with some text materials (also good, I'll grant) that give you smaller pieces to work with . The stories can also be amusing, and the book incorporates cultural notes that help put things in context.

I love this book a lot! It's set up really well. There is Korean and English to each story. Each story has pre-reading questions, vocabulary, post-reading questions, and a writing prompt. Some stories included relevant cultural information which I found helpful. As a polygot, I think this book is great. The stories get more difficult, but you'll see reoccurring themes and vocabulary. At a certain point the questions don't have English translations so you have to try to figure out what's being asked (there's always a translation for the story). Overall, I really think this is a great book for self-study. Keep in mind that I am a beginner Korean learner, so I can't vouch for the quality of Korean in the book but I love the set up of this book a lot.

..as far as I can tell, being late beginner/ early intermediate. Have found an error, actually, although one that makes sense if you're typing fast: basically, in the vocab list for the story of the girl and boy that became the sun and moon, (and i apologize as I have no Korean keyboard right now) the word "mun" in korean is said to mean "moon" in english when it actually means "door". Again, it makes sense as a mistake if you're typing fast, since they sound alike.Aside from that, I really enjoy the book. I got the kindle edition, so as I read a new story, I highlight the words I don't know (or the ones that are hard for me to pronounce) and I look them up in a dictionary later (for the ones that aren't initially in the vocab list). Then, I write the meaning in the notes of each highlight, and try to read again without checking the note.

I really like this book, it starts with stories that are edited for beginners to understand and gets progressively more complex as the book goes along. I really appreciate that the authors made the book in response to their beginner Korean students' request for approachable reading material.

It’s a very nice book with both Korean and English version for each story. There are also a lot of interesting cultural notes and there is a small vocabulary at the end!

Even though I've had this book for about 5 minutes, I'm extremely happy with the purchase. I've been looking for a Korean/English book with some short stories so I can practice reading faster as I practice Korean daily. I would recommend this for someone who understands the basics of Korean language, survival vocabulary, and can comfortably read korean words.

Great book for ppl taking a formal korean class but not so much for anyone learning on their own. It has a vocab list for certain words in each story but you have to know basic korean to understand the rest.

Amazon lumps different translations together as merely variations on how the book is delivered. In this case, the Hays translation is the hardcover, while the authors who translated the paperback and Kindle versions aren't specified. So use the tools available (look inside, free sample) to get an idea of the language used by the author and see if it's something you'd like to read, or if a different translation suits you better.

I am sincerely pissed that I was not provided a copy of this as a kid growing up. I have devised a work around to the whole "Not growing up with a father figure" issue. I have decided that Marcus Aurealis is my actual father, and Socrates is my great uncle and Thales is my grand father. I realize this sounds nutty to read but I honestly feel more in common with these thinkers then the absent XY chromosome donor.

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:This version:Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.George Long's version:From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

First, do we all recognize that the author of this text, Marcus Aurelius, was a Roman Emperor? If so, why have I not been forced to read this from a young age? This is quite possibly the most insightful, existential book I've ever read. Emperor Aurelius has given us wisdom in its purest form. This should be a manual for every human's life. Every sentence is mind-numbingly profound. This book is so good, that I might just have the entire text tattooed on my body. I cannot stress enough that the sagacity of this book is beyond what I have ever read. Definitely a must-read and a must-live-by.
