I have retired from public life, and am now become a law student, and of necessity a pro se litigant or litigation adviser to others at no charge. My handbook for pro se litigants requires two books - The Holy Bible, and Blackstone's Commentaries. Proper study of these two books, and the most recent Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, will equip one with the equivalent of a Harvard education of 1850, and you will not be disadvantaged in any courtroom proceeding. For extra credit, or just plain entertainment, listen to George Gordon's Hour of Power, and get an edge.I have not previously encountered such a book as this one. Presenting your story to the jury has been quite simply a learn-as-you-go process. You may practice for thirty-eight years and never encounter a jury. You may encounter a jury every week for thirty-eight years, and if you are fortunate you may learn what you are able to read in this book in four hours. In thirty-eight years, you will have thirty-eight years invested, and your clients will have several hundred dollars invested. And as they say, one learns more from losing than winning.If you are a pro se litigant, read this book. It is now Book Three in my syllabus. If you are a professional attorney already, don't waste your time. You have many important things to do today. I hope we meet up in court sometime.

It covers the basics, but then adds insight and invaluable tips from two top lawyers who have spent their careers in the trenches. Lawyers spend hundreds of dollars to attend CLE programs for a fraction of the useful information contained in this book. If you want real continuing legal education, read this book.

One of the most practical trial books I have ever read. As a Civil Trial specialist certified in Civil Trial Law by the Board of Legal Specialization, I have not read a book before that dissects trial transcripts and identifies both good and bad practice tips on real lawyer examples like this book does. As a managing partner of my firm I have bought this for all my trial attorneys and highly recommend any civil trial practitioner (no matter what the experience) to read!

Salient advice. Easy to digest. Excellent read. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to increase their efficiency and effectiveness in the courtroom (which should be everyone, right?). The authors' use of real trial transcripts to drive home techniques really sets this book apart. Also a fun read for anyone who's simply curious about what the courtroom is really like.

This book is a thorough, yet easily digestible, guideline that can and should be used by law students, practitioners, professors, or anyone else looking to learn the best practices when advocating during a jury trial. This book is unique in that it details the perspective of not only the trial attorney, but also the perspective of a judge.

I am writing a review for a book of an author whose underlying premise I reject, but whose practical thinking outside the box is provocative.Robert Lupton, a Presbyterian, believes that a chief part of the Church’s mission in the world is to relieve and reverse world poverty. I reject this remise as unbiblical. At the same time, we know that helping the poor is to be a norm of our Christian existence as God gives opportunity.The author is also a revolutionary who champions radical reform in the world of charity and the aid industry. Lupton sees the vast majority of aid work in the world as unprofitable, even destructive, both materially and spiritually, to its recipients. To this my experience heartily agrees.While criticism of the status quo is a point of this volume, it is not the main point. He has made that point elsewhere (Toxic Charity). This book is more about how to help the poor in ways that lead to genuine economic long-term benefit. In short, his book is a call to Christian businessmen to go into the world and use their business acumen to help the poor by creating jobs and teaching job skills. This, Lupton says, is what really works.I found it very helpful to think through what the author is saying. It helps our family think through how to best help others who are in need.Here are some quotes from the book that give a taste of what he communicates:“Giving to people in need what they could be gaining from their own initiative may well be the kindest way to destroy them.”“The fact is, we cannot serve others out of poverty, no matter how much we may want to. That is a core concept of both my mission and this book. And the reason I am so passionate about broadcasting this bad news about the status quo is that I care deeply about charity’s goals and results: I want to move people out of poverty. That is my life’s work.”“The only effective charity is the kind that asks more from those being served, rather than less. Asking for more sends an affirming message to the recipient that he or she also has something of value to offer.”“IS HURTFUL CHARITY BETTER than no charity at all? The answer is no.”“One of the most significant, rational decisions that determine the outcome of our charity is distinguishing between crisis and chronic need. Making money with the poor, after all, is the highest form of charity.”“Only living - wage jobs can move the poverty needle — jobs that local residents create through their own hard work and ingenuity, and jobs produced by for - profit businesses created by outside investors and operators.”

This is a book our Book Club read after previously reading Toxic Charity, by the same author. It made us think more clearly about what we are doing with our neighborhood at church, and about social programs that purport to help the poor, but only in the end, create dependency and lower self-esteem on the part of the helped. A tough book, over all, because it tells how hard it really is to change social policy, and what concerted effort it takes to change a neighborhood. Just the right circumstances have to be in place, and the right intent on the part of the helpers. Puts in a plug for the essential assistance of business and the hard-headed, cold look at results, with the end goal to make a profit while making a difference, for only in that way will a program sustain itself. Recommended for all do-gooders.

This is an OUTSTANDING book that I would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in finding practical ways to make their charitable dollars more effective in their impact. As a psychologist and consultant to families of wealth, I've been exposed to numerous approaches (all well-meaning) to helping those less fortunate financially. I've followed Bob (Lupton) and his work for decades and he clearly has the experience and track record to "shoot straight" with the rest of us. I would strongly encourage you to get and read this book. It will challenge and encourage you.

This is a real thought provoker. I think there is something in this book for everyone, right or left, conservative or liberal. This book is really a part two of the author's other book "Toxic Charity". This book picks up where that left off. That book documents where charities may not be the fix but the cause of poverty. Now the author answers what to do next.He calls for an little introduction of capitalism to fix the problem. He lays out an argument in why and how that should be accomplished. That for sure alone would cause intense discussions by many. Then he dives even deeper. He reinvents the principle of example. People need to move back into the war zone which as become the inner city of so many of our cities. This power of getting involved in those communities first by living there then getting involved would change things. I personally am not so sure about that but it is an interesting thought.The book has a lot of fascinating ideas. The author does lay it out in easy to understand terms. The book is very simple to go through. However there is a lack of empirical research to illustrate and prove his points.

On the money....I have worked for inter-city Christian non-profits and the biggest frustration is how government benefits tie our hands when it comes to helping people escape poverty. All the services provided in the city by well-meaning Christians have little long-lasting results, they rarely move beyond maintenance. Also, Lupton's naming of poverty of things beyond financial...spot on.

Want to challenge how you think about charity? Read this! It is excellent and extremely thought provoking. It has challenged me as I wrestle through what effective charity actually looks like and who is actually getting help/feeling good with most of the current charity models.

I gave this book only four stars for the fact much of the information is a repeat from this authors previously written book "Charity Detox." Yet what is new is really quite informative. To think that so many Christians in our churches every Sunday could have the potential to alleviate poverty is worth shouting out from the pulpits. Great book.

Excellent source book for community workers and organizers (especially faith-based) and philanthropists. His examples are mostly from Christian-based organizations but are clear and pointed. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the book could use a good sweep by a good editor to eliminate repetition. I'm recommending the book wherever I can.

I've never worked with this version of SQL before and needed to learn basic and mid-level query skills quickly due to change in a project's structure. This helped me get quickly up-to-speed and pulled in a few comments of praise from my boss for my ability to learn something so quickly. Project is back on track and we main even bring it to completion a little earlier than proposed.NOTE: This is not going to make you a T-SQL expert. It's basic and rather simplistic which is what I needed to counter a crisis. I will be purchasing a more advanced book later.

I've been quite happy with this book. I've been learning SQL basically through experimentation and Google Searches. This book does a very nice job of guiding the user along. It is very easy to follow. The book will serve as a handy reference I'm sure.

I'm teaching myself fundamental SQL. With 0 other education, I can now write simplistic queries to get what I need. I've read the beginning chapters a couple times - I've yet to finish, but regardless. It's working for me.

I have some familiarity with SQL but new to SQL Server T-SQL. Forta's book is perfect for my needs: it is organized logically; each lesson is laid out logically; the examples were meaningful; and all the notes and cautions were great.Forta's style is very clear and succinct. I've read many of his other books on ColdFusion and he demonstrates the same knowledge understanding here as he did with those books.The "in 10 Minutes" format was also great for my level of knowledge. You get a level of satisfaction as you complete each small lesson and as you progress, you feel you are mastering the subject. I finally understand what cursors are and how to use them.I'll be next reviewing a T-SQL text that goes even deeper into the language. With the background gained from Forta's book, I think this process should be rather effortless!I highly recommend this book and any others by this author.

Honing what I learned in this book helped me switch careers. Out of a dead end job and doing something I really enjoy now with a much higher wage ceiling.

I loved this story. While there were multiple elements of Pride and Prejudice, I enjoyed the modern twist that brought up very important issues. Our experiences and circumstances shape us in a way, whether we are trying to fit into our environment or trying to purposely stand apart from it. While we may share parts of our cultural identity with others, that doesn't always make us the same. This book took on thoughts around cultural identity, socioeconomic status, and what we think it means to be black, rich, etc. How we judge whether someone is enough, or whether they meet our standard of a cultural identity. There is also this underlying idea of accepting and being proud of who you are, but also not being afraid of change that is inevitable.Another topic I thought was beautifully handdled was the many facets of gentrification. This is a real and relevant issue, because many of us disregard what is different, or history that may not include us, yet is still so important. We tend to just want to improve things the way we think they should be improved (which is not always the best for everyone else).Which leads me to one of my favorite parts of this book, the family dynamics of the Benitez's. They celebrate their culture identity, and the history of their neighborhood. They treat neighbors as family, and truly care about others. They support each other in such a beautiful way. Honestly, the connection is just inspiring. I would definitely recommend this book!

PRIDE is short for PRIDE and PREJUDICE as IbI Zoboi has accepted a world-wide challenge to write her version of a classic. Perhaps the most famous so far is Anne Tyler's VINEGAR GIRL her take on THE TAMING OF THE SHREW.Zoboi sets her version in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn where Yuppies are changing the familiar landscape. The protagonist is Zuri Benitez who lives with her four sisters in an apartment across from a remodeled mini-mansion. A twist on our expectations is that an upper class black family is moving in, and the two boys are really handsome. Her sister, Janae, falls for Ainsley right away. Darius Darcy acts like he's too good for the girls.So . . . we know what to expect. Zuri is Elizabeth Bennett and she will eventually fall for Darius, who unbeknownst to us already likes her. She finds out for sure when they both make a college visit, she at Howard, him at Georgetown in Washington DC. His sister Gigi also goes to boarding school in Washington DC, a minor plot device. He compliments her on a poem she reads at a college hangout when she notices him in the audience.Zuri is a proud black American, and she's not about to fall for some boy just because he's rich and good-looking, and she's deeply offended when one of Darius's relatives implies exactly that. Zoboi overdoes this aspect of Zuri's personality. A boy from the projects, with whom she goes on a “not a date” says he's always wanted to “get with” one of the fat a**sed Benitez girls, and she doesn't hand him his head. It's unusual that Zuri is so touchy since Janae, the oldest, doesn't do that at all, nor do her little sisters who are just as boy crazy as a Valley girl. This could be necessary, however, as Elizabeth Bennett was notably head strong.I liked the fact that the Darcy boys were black and were still considered Yuppi invaders. We know that's the case in some black circles where a lighter shade of skin puts a person higher on the hierarchy or desirability. It's never adequately explained why the Darcy parents picked Bushwick as their new home. They had lived in a smaller house so perhaps it was a matter of affordability. The grandmother, however, lives in what sounds like an even bigger mansion.It's rather hard to keep the character's straight. One of the sisters is away at Duke, and there's also the owner of the apartment, Madrina, who teaches Zuri what sounds like voodoo. There are, after all, originally from Haiti. Zuri also has a sister named Marisol. I still don't know where she fits in the family.

It’s hard for me to rate this novel because I don’t think I’m the target demographic. However being the Janeite, that I am, with a lifelong obsession with P&P, this novel made me realize some things about Lizzy that I never had before. Zuri, isn’t the most instantly likeable character in the world- she’s bossy, a knowitall, incredibly judgmental and closed-minded, unwilling to try new things, in a way that Jane Austen never quite revealed about Elizabeth Bennet. The family, the Benitez’s is just as cringey, as the Bennett’s and overall, this is pretty accurately a YAF urban, adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.The writing of this is done in Zuri’s voice and so even when she’s being obnoxious, you get to go on the journey through the book with her. Zuri rides hard for Brooklyn and so as readers, this reads as a love letter to Brooklyn and not just Brooklyn in general, the particular section of Brooklyn where ZZ and her family are from. Zuri is somewhat of a poet, so there are a lot of poetry breaks within this novel, as poetry seems to be how the main character processes her thoughts and emotions and the poems are overall pretty good.The themes of this novel go beyond class and prejudice and perceptions and preconceived notions to address the issue of gentrification of traditionally ethnic neighborhoods and how that affects the people who live there. Another major issue in this novel is race and racial relations between black people of different socioeconomic statuses and to a lesser extent between black and white people. I think there are some pretty heavy topics covered in what is basically a YA love story that make it pretty essential reading for young people of all races in contemporary America.This was a slow starter for me as a novel. Whilst I could readily recognize the plot trajectory and characters, I found them all universally bland for the first third of the book and would have given this maybe two stars. However, I’m glad I stuck with this long enough to discover what was actually a pretty enjoyable read. It wasn’t excellent by any means, but it was at least a 3.5-star read overall and possibly even 4-stars if someone is actually in the YA demographic.

This book is lucidly written, and, at the same time, is very deep in scope, all while being a very convicting treatise on Christian practices.What impressed me most about this book was Prof. Pohl's ability to explain the spiritual and practical importance of each practice she outlines, root each practice in the authority of the text, and give short, but clear-eyed, analysis of how our current culture is lacking and could benefit from each practice. This is no small order and is quite an accomplishment.I consider this book seminal on where the Western church needs to go next. Now all we need to do is actually do it. Prof. Pohl gives us her sympathies and some narratives from her own experiences, both success and failures, about how hard this work really is. This brings me to my final praise of the book, Prof. Pohl has actually been in the trenches and tried to do this stuff, so she knows how hard it is.If you are currently trying to build authentic Christian community, read this book (with others, if you can)!

The first chapter seemed a bit technical, which was needed to set the foundation, but the following chapters were much more accessible and insightful. One woman said the book has changed her prayer life. Another said its bringing changes deep to her soul, something she's been longing for. Would definitely recommend for any church that seeks to lead its people to honest, meaningful relationships building and community serving.

this book is an excellent summary of a recent study of how to make communities healthy and nurturing. it app;lies to Church communities, religious communities and even families. i believe some of it would apply to non profit groups like neighborhood associations... since it describes such "practices" as truth telling, promise keeping, gratitude and hospitality.it's worth the read.

This is a beautifully written (poetic at times) book about the practices of community that should be integral to every Christian's life, and a featured part of every churches mission statement. In a increasingly fragmented, individualistic, consumer oriented society, it's pretty easy to forget the call to community that is at the foundation of Christian living, but the author gently and beautifully reminds us of the importance of this calling.

This is an encouraging yet honest exploration of Christian practices that genuinely help build and sustain community in the body of Christ. I especially appreciated her attention to the essential need for truth in relationship.

This day planner is awesome, a nice notebook for any Fairy Tail fan to have. the illustrations are beautiful and the bonus manga is great. The only issue i had is it mentions stickers in the description but mine didn't include any, but a great product regardless

As a hardcore fan of the series, I loved how this planner was made. Way more content than I thought there would be and it’s sturdy

If you like the work of Hiro Mashima, this planner is great. But the description of what you will get is not what I got. There were no quizzes, no stickers, no character interviews. There were bonus manga stories in the back, so that much was correct. The "day planner" itself is very customizable. There are 12 sections of about 22 pages each with space for writing appointments or making notes for about 31 days. Each of the 12 sections is a different color from the others, so you can flip back to a particular month according to the color. As far as dates are concerned, you'll need to write that in yourself in a multi-toned box that allows "month", "weekday", and "date" information. Every calendar page has a drawing of one or more characters and dividing pages are often totally filled with characters. Mine arrived with the corners bent and dented from inadequate packaging for the journey here. I suppose it would have been dented with lots of daily use, but I'd prefer that it had started off in great shape, and it wasn't.

The Fairy Tail Planner likely will be loved by fans of this popular anime series. Being a fan of the series myself, I am pretty happy with it. However the description is a bit misleading because it promotes games and stickers but neither is included. Aside from that this is a generally nice planner that can be used from 2018-2019 or anytime for that matter. I say this because there are a few pages in the front of the planner that list the months and dates for 2018-2019, however, the pages in the planner are not dated so you can write whatever month, date, and weekday you wish. The fact you can date the pages yourself has made this planner much more valuable in my eyes because you can get it for yourself or a friend and they can start using it whenever they'd like not just the beginning of the current year or in the middle of it.The planner is quite nice. The colors are bold and eye-catching. The illustrations throughout some in black and white and others in full color look great. The pages in the planner aren't all the same color which helps to find whatever page you were writing a lot easier. I like how planner pages have a little missions box for you to write whatever you'd like. The mission box is great for tasks that need to be done that day or in the days ahead. I thought the addition was clever and corresponded with the anime well since the characters are part of a guild that often goes on missions.I like that the front of the planner has a place to write personal information ( phone number, address, emergency contact). There is also a General Information section that has website links for informational/reference sites, phone numbers for crisis hotlines, and a list of the dates and names US Federal Holidays for 2019/2019. There's a two-page spread to write down a Daily Schedule which would be handy for a student with a mainly unchanging class scheduleThe pages are pretty thick and most regular ink and gels pens won't bleed through. I wouldn't really suggest using Sharpie type markers in it.The fact this planner includes three manga stories makes it more than a nice planner but a great collector's item for fans.

I came back to revise my review and raise my star rating because my daughter is home after many years away at college. She saw the Fairy Tale planner and immediately asked if she could have it. I had been looking for a small planner and was disappointed by the size, which makes it a little much to carry in my purse. She loves the graphics, stories, and pointed out that the pages are not dated, which means she can use it. It is not expired! That alone makes it better than most, but I can also say that it is, in fact, a hit with someone who is a fan of the series. It also includes some bonuis short stories. It is sure to be a hit with fans of the series. The reason I rated it 4 stars is purely functional. It is too large to realistically carry. A paperback cover is not going to hold up to the abuse a day planners sees/ There are no tabed sections for important numbers, or anything else. In fac I woul be hard pressed to call it a day planner. It shares none of the features of any other day planner I have ever had.I sincerely doubt that this is about functionality. If you are a fan of the series, or know someone who is, he or she will surely enjoy it. It has large enough pages to accommodate even the busiest schedules, but little else that is strictly practical,
