I love this book. I now enjoy playing pool with my spouse. When we invested in a pool table for our home, I wanted an instruction book to help me have a better understanding of the game and how to improve play... without having to be a whiz at geometry (i.e. angles) and "trick" shots. I looked at a lot of the books offered on the subject and THIS one was just what I needed. It's well written and takes the reader on an easy to understand journey of the game, the tools of the game, and how to play the game. Just as the title says, it's about "basic pool". My play has improved and I've learned that basic shots and basic cue ball techniques can win games.

This book was a gift for a friend who has been wanted to learn how to play pool and she loved it. It has a lot of good information and is easy to understand because there are A LOT of pictures to show you how to apply what you're reading. This was a great buy and worth the money.

Overall a good book for someone who is brand new to the game. The only drawback is that while you are reading it references pictures that are on other pages. So you end up going back and forth quite a bit.

I learned a little more about pool.

Easy to read and understand, this takes some of the mystery out of the game. Apply what they tell you with practice and u cannot help but play better. you migh not make the shot but at least you know what you are doing, and doing it correctly. A great book and will probably help more skilled players too

China Rich Girlfriend is the worst.I read Crazy Rich Asians because I saw the poster for the movie , and yes, I'm one of those snobs who generally believe that the book is always better than the movie.This was one situation where, as I read, I could see that here was a good idea which could be made great with the right team of screen writers and casting directors.China Rich Girlfriend takes what was horrible about Crazy Rich Asians and amps it up, with the effect of drowning out what was good about the first book.The use of footnotes in the first book was convenient, more like subtitles which allowed the characters to break into their native tongues quite naturally. By the time we get to China Rich, Kevin Kwan uses them as running commentary on the characters and situations. Like watching a movie with that friend who has strong opinions on everything and keeps chattering away as you're trying to immerse yourself in the experience.Also, I'm sure by this time, we get it. The characters are rich. The book degenerates into pages and pages of describing bathrooms and jets and handbags and shoes and cars... I think there is only about 25% of story buried in 75% explanation about how Astrid's style is deceptively simple. How charming! Bracelets from 650 BC and a dress from Zara! How does she do it! But wait! Michael's Ferrari!I'm giving it 2 stars because despite the atrocious writing, one dimensional characters etc. I'm still going to buy the 3rd book.Sigh.

I absolutely loved this book and of course must start by saying that you really need to read "Crazy Rich Asians" (Book One) before you even pick this up because some of the more subtle story lines will fall flat without that back drop. Above everything else, what I appreciated the most was that this mini series actually provided resolution to the most important stories.There were some characters from the first book who fizzled away without explanation, and a couple of twists that seemed to come out of left field, but none of that changed the fact that I devoured this 400+ page book and enjoyed every minute of it.

Author Kevin Kwan returns with characters from his earlier novel, Crazy Rich Asians: Nicholas Young and Rachel Chu who are about to get married, Nick’s cousin Astrid Leong, and Hong Kong soap opera star Kitty Pong who is now married to billionaire Bernard Tai. The plot has us bouncing around to various locations all over the world, a device which shows us how wealthy everyone is with their own jumbo jets, magnificent mansions, closets full of designer clothes, oodles of expensive jewels, and net worth in the billions of dollars. Kwan devotes plenty of ink to these trappings of wealth but unfortunately skimps on his characters and the story line. It gets rather tiresome after reading page after page of prose that resembles an inventory of valuables for an insurance policy. A big disappointment after enjoying Kwan’s earlier book.

I LOVE this series and cannot wait for the third book to come out. When I read the first book in the series it took me a little while to adjust to the writing style of the author before I started to really love the characters and the plot. The books don't necessarily have an ending, it's more of a continuation and makes you want more. Kwan thoroughly thought out the characters and you can't help but fall in love with Rachel, Nick, and of course, Astrid (!). The second book was laid out a little differently style-wise than the first but it's easy to adjust since most of the characters are the same but there are some plot twists and new characters. Overall an awesome read!

I rated this book based on how engaging and fun to read it was. It's not my usual deep philosophical tome but having grown up in the Philippines , I did have many Chinese friends and was raised by a beloved Chinese amah. I love their culture and respect for family. This book shows a very extreme culture within that people who embody the notion that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I thought this was better than the first of the trilogy (Crazy Rich Asians... which I also loved.) The drama started right away and you were quickly transported into the luxury scene of some of China and Singapore’s most elite families. This is a perfect beach read. Also great any time of the year if you’re just looking for something fun and entertaining. Be sure to read the whole trilogy!

This book is like eating a milk shake with whipped cream. It will fill you up but there's not a lot of substance. It's just frothy fun but a little boring and not much to it. I'm on to the third book in the trilogy, though. I'm learning so much about this culture...I had no idea.

Very fun summer read! All of the characters in the first book, CrazyRrich Asians, and the continued nicely into this book. It is what I would call a beach read and sometimes that's all you want. It is what I would call a beach read and sometimes that's all you want I don't want to come away with his knowing that I would like to go to Asia and how beautiful all of these places sound . Also I live in an area where there is not much Chinese food so it makes me crave all of the things that I missed from where I lived before .

I purchased this Seekers book as a gift for my nine year old. She loves the Warriors series and had read them all already so naturally this book had some expectations to live up to. It is a wonderful story and totally lives up to the author's reputation. The only down side was its length. Our girl read it in an evening and now is asking for the next one. I would also recommend this one to anyone who loves the graphic novel style. Its already in the hands of our second grade son who has ADHD and usually won't follow an entire story line. The comic style keeps his attention.

Great prequel for Kalliks' story. starting with her mother before birth then heading out to the ice. Wonderful story and great pictures.

I am a librarian in Pennsylvania and I heard how a lot of people like mangas of Warrior Cats and Seekers; so I bought this for my library and people won't stop renting it! I even bought the paperback for myself and it is a cute book for the kids that visit. This copy is for SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY, however. It is a hardcover, the reason being to prevent major wear. Very durable; will buy from Erin Hunter again soon.

A great series I have been buying for the school library. Kids love it and the story is uplifting.

My favorite part was when they saved Muddy. -Blake, 7 years old

My granddaughter loves this series and was thrilled to have her Christmas wish fulfilled. This series talks to young folks!

Proper study of these two books, and the most recent Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, will equip one with the equivalent of a Harvard education of 1850, and you will not be disadvantaged in any courtroom proceeding. For extra credit, or just plain entertainment, listen to George Gordon's Hour of Power, and get an edge.I have not previously encountered such a book as this one. Presenting your story to the jury has been quite simply a learn-as-you-go process. You may practice for thirty-eight years and never encounter a jury. You may encounter a jury every week for thirty-eight years, and if you are fortunate you may learn what you are able to read in this book in four hours. In thirty-eight years, you will have thirty-eight years invested, and your clients will have several hundred dollars invested. I am writing a review for a book of an author whose underlying premise I reject, but whose practical thinking outside the box is provocative.Robert Lupton, a Presbyterian, believes that a chief part of the Church’s mission in the world is to relieve and reverse world poverty. I reject this remise as unbiblical. At the same time, we know that helping the poor is to be a norm of our Christian existence as God gives opportunity.The author is also a revolutionary who champions radical reform in the world of charity and the aid industry. Lupton sees the vast majority of aid work in the world as unprofitable, even destructive, both materially and spiritually, to its recipients. To this my experience heartily agrees.While criticism of the status quo is a point of this volume, it is not the main point. He has made that point elsewhere (Toxic Charity). This book is more about how to help the poor in ways that lead to genuine economic long-term benefit. In short, his book is a call to Christian businessmen to go into the world and use their business acumen to help the poor by creating jobs and teaching job skills. This, Lupton says, is what really works.I found it very helpful to think through what the author is saying. It helps our family think through how to best help others who are in need.Here are some quotes from the book that give a taste of what he communicates:“Giving to people in need what they could be gaining from their own initiative may well be the kindest way to destroy them.”“The fact is, we cannot serve others out of poverty, no matter how much we may want to. That is a core concept of both my mission and this book. And the reason I am so passionate about broadcasting this bad news about the status quo is that I care deeply about charity’s goals and results: I want to move people out of poverty. That is my life’s work.”“The only effective charity is the kind that asks more from those being served, rather than less. Asking for more sends an affirming message to the recipient that he or she also has something of value to offer.”“IS HURTFUL CHARITY BETTER than no charity at all? The answer is no.”“One of the most significant, rational decisions that determine the outcome of our charity is distinguishing between crisis and chronic need. This is a book our Book Club read after previously reading Toxic Charity, by the same author. It made us think more clearly about what we are doing with our neighborhood at church, and about social programs that purport to help the poor, but only in the end, create dependency and lower self-esteem on the part of the helped. A tough book, over all, because it tells how hard it really is to change social policy, and what concerted effort it takes to change a neighborhood. Just the right circumstances have to be in place, and the right intent on the part of the helpers. Puts in a plug for the essential assistance of business and the hard-headed, cold look at results, with the end goal to make a profit while making a difference, for only in that way will a program sustain itself. Recommended for all do-gooders.

This is an OUTSTANDING book that I would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in finding practical ways to make their charitable dollars more effective in their impact. As a psychologist and consultant to families of wealth, I've been exposed to numerous approaches (all well-meaning) to helping those less fortunate financially. I've followed Bob (Lupton) and his work for decades and he clearly has the experience and track record to "shoot straight" with the rest of us. I would strongly encourage you to get and read this book. It will challenge and encourage you.

This is a real thought provoker. I think there is something in this book for everyone, right or left, conservative or liberal. This book is really a part two of the author's other book "Toxic Charity". This book picks up where that left off. That book documents where charities may not be the fix but the cause of poverty. Now the author answers what to do next.He calls for an little introduction of capitalism to fix the problem. He lays out an argument in why and how that should be accomplished. That for sure alone would cause intense discussions by many. Then he dives even deeper. He reinvents the principle of example. People need to move back into the war zone which as become the inner city of so many of our cities. This power of getting involved in those communities first by living there then getting involved would change things. I personally am not so sure about that but it is an interesting thought.The book has a lot of fascinating ideas. The author does lay it out in easy to understand terms. The book is very simple to go through. However there is a lack of empirical research to illustrate and prove his points.

On the money....I have worked for inter-city Christian non-profits and the biggest frustration is how government benefits tie our hands when it comes to helping people escape poverty. All the services provided in the city by well-meaning Christians have little long-lasting results, they rarely move beyond maintenance. Also, Lupton's naming of poverty of things beyond financial...spot on.

Want to challenge how you think about charity? Read this! It is excellent and extremely thought provoking. It has challenged me as I wrestle through what effective charity actually looks like and who is actually getting help/feeling good with most of the current charity models.

I gave this book only four stars for the fact much of the information is a repeat from this authors previously written book "Charity Detox." Yet what is new is really quite informative. To think that so many Christians in our churches every Sunday could have the potential to alleviate poverty is worth shouting out from the pulpits. Great book.

Excellent source book for community workers and organizers (especially faith-based) and philanthropists. His examples are mostly from Christian-based organizations but are clear and pointed. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the book could use a good sweep by a good editor to eliminate repetition. I'm recommending the book wherever I can.

I've never worked with this version of SQL before and needed to learn basic and mid-level query skills quickly due to change in a project's structure. This helped me get quickly up-to-speed and pulled in a few comments of praise from my boss for my ability to learn something so quickly. Project is back on track and we main even bring it to completion a little earlier than proposed.NOTE: This is not going to make you a T-SQL expert. It's basic and rather simplistic which is what I needed to counter a crisis. I will be purchasing a more advanced book later.

I've been quite happy with this book. I've been learning SQL basically through experimentation and Google Searches. This book does a very nice job of guiding the user along. It is very easy to follow. The book will serve as a handy reference I'm sure.

I'm teaching myself fundamental SQL. With 0 other education, I can now write simplistic queries to get what I need. I've read the beginning chapters a couple times - I've yet to finish, but regardless. It's working for me.

I have some familiarity with SQL but new to SQL Server T-SQL. Forta's book is perfect for my needs: it is organized logically; each lesson is laid out logically; the examples were meaningful; and all the notes and cautions were great.Forta's style is very clear and succinct. I've read many of his other books on ColdFusion and he demonstrates the same knowledge understanding here as he did with those books.The "in 10 Minutes" format was also great for my level of knowledge. You get a level of satisfaction as you complete each small lesson and as you progress, you feel you are mastering the subject. I finally understand what cursors are and how to use them.I'll be next reviewing a T-SQL text that goes even deeper into the language. With the background gained from Forta's book, I think this process should be rather effortless!I highly recommend this book and any others by this author.

Honing what I learned in this book helped me switch careers. Out of a dead end job and doing something I really enjoy now with a much higher wage ceiling.
