All round was the lunar landscape of slag-heaps, and to the north, through the passes, as it were, between the mountains of slag, you could see the factory chimneys sending out their plumes of smoke. The canal path was a mixture of cinders and frozen mud, criss-crossed by the imprints of innumerable clogs, and all round, as far as the slag-heaps in the distance, stretched the “flashes”—pools of stagnant water that has seeped into the hollows caused by the subsidence of ancient pits. It was horribly cold. The “flashes” were covered with ice the colour of raw umber, the bargemen were muffled to the eyes in sacks, the lock gates wore beards of ice. It seemed a world from which vegetation had been banished; nothing existed except smoke, shale, ice, mud, ashes and foul water. But even Wigan is beautiful compared with Sheffield.More typical is an observation like this:As for pubs, they are banished from the housing estates almost completely, and the few that remain are dismal sham-Tudor places fitted out by the big brewery companies and very expensive. For a middle-class population this would be a nuisance—it might mean walking a mile to get a glass of beer; for a working-class population, which uses the pub as a kind of club, it is a serious blow at communal life. It is a great achievement to get slum-dwellers into decent houses, but it is unfortunate that, owing to the peculiar temper of our time, it is also considered necessary to rob them of the last vestiges of their liberty. The people themselves feel this, and it is this feeling that they are rationalising when they complain that their new houses—so much better, as houses, than those they have come out of—are cold and uncomfortable and “unhomelike.”We haven't got to the socialists yet, because Orwell then makes some observations on class, particularly his class, which was 'educated,' but not wealthy. Some of this section reminded me of Keep the Aspidistra Flying, a novel Orwell wrote on the same theme. His conclusion is this:The fact that has got to be faced is that to abolish class-distinctions means abolishing a part of yourself. Here am I, a typical member of the middle class. It is easy for me to say that I want to get rid of class-distinctions, but nearly everything I think and do is a result of class-distinctions. All my notions—notions of good and evil, of pleasant and unpleasant, of funny and serious, of ugly and beautiful—are essentially middle-class notions; my taste in books and food and clothes, my sense of honour, my table manners, my turns of speech, my accent, even the characteristic movements of my body, are the products of a special kind of upbringing and a special niche about half-way up the social hierarchy. When I grasp this I grasp that it is no use clapping a proletarian on the back and telling him that he is as good a man as I am; if I want real contact with him, I have got to make an effort for which very likely I am unprepared. For to get outside the class-racket I have got to suppress not merely my private snobbishness, but most of my other tastes and prejudices as well.Well into the book now, the quote I was looking for. It may ring some bells:One sometimes gets the impression that the mere words “Socialism” and “Communism” draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, “Nature Cure” quack, pacifist and feminist in England. One day this summer I was riding through Letchworth when the bus stopped and two dreadful-looking old men got on to it. They were both about sixty, both very short, pink and chubby, and both hatless. One of them was obscenely bald, the other had long grey hair bobbed in the Lloyd George style. They were dressed in pistachio-coloured shirts and khaki shorts into which their huge bottoms were crammed so tightly that you could study every dimple. Their appearance created a mild stir of horror on top of the bus. The man next to me, a commercial traveller I should say, glanced at me, at them, and back again at me, and murmured, “Socialists,” as who should say, “Red Indians.” He was probably right—the I.L.P. were holding their summer school at Letchworth. But the point is that to him, as an ordinary man, a crank meant a Socialist and a Socialist meant a crank.And a bonus quote:The truth is that to many people, calling themselves Socialists, revolution does not mean a movement of the masses with which they hope to associate themselves; it means a set of reforms which “we,” the clever ones, are going to impose upon “them,” the Lower Orders. On the other hand, it would be a mistake to regard the book-trained Socialist as a bloodless creature entirely incapable of emotion. Though seldom giving much evidence of affection for the exploited, he is perfectly capable of displaying hatred—a sort of queer, theoretical, in vacuo hatred—against the exploiters. Hence the grand old Socialist sport of denouncing the bourgeoisie. It is strange how easily almost any Socialist writer can lash himself into frenzies of rage against the class to which, by birth or by adoption, he himself invariably belongs.The reason I am lengthening this review with so many quotes is that I actually finished the book over a year ago, but reading my highlights has reminded me how rich it is. Well worth reading, especially for anyone who has enjoyed other books by George Orwell.

The kindle version of the book is unreadable due to numerous errors, presumably resulting from some poor text recognition software used to digitize the text. I've listed a few examples below, taken directly from the kindle version, along with some snarky comments.Page 17 (typos): "Most of the things one imagines in hell are if there. " People who sell written materials without proofreading them first can go hell if a hand basket.Page 17 (missing words?) "When you finally got there - and getting there is a in itself..." A chore? A grind? Maybe the letter "a" is just short for "ass." Getting there is ass in itself. I could get on board with that.Page 17 (punctuation errors): "They are feeding it on to the conveyor belt, a moving rubber, belt a couple of feet wide which runs a yard or two behind them." To be, or not to, be.Page 19 (punctuation errors): "This is chiefly because the mere effort of getting from place to place; makes it difficult to notice anything else, In some ways it is even disappointing, or at least is unlike what you have, expected." Wow.I'll be requesting a refund.

Most folks only know the great Orwell through Animal Farm and 1984 (or at the very least, they associate him with them) but his earlier material is essential reading for insight to his socialist beliefs. His colorful, honest style of reportage whilst lodging, eating, working and living amongst the coal miners in England's north country provides a harrowing account of workers' struggles and tragedies and a scathing rebuke of capitalist greed and apathy toward it's labor force. You could almost taste the coal dust and breathe the fetid air with his descriptive detail.

Book one, describing the conditions of the lower classes in the North of England in 1937, is a sensitive contribution to a voluminous tradition. Book two, which details the class prejudices impeding socialism, is truly original and quite relevant to 2018 America.Orwell writes as a member of the “sinking middle class,” whose pretensions linger despite a three pound a week income (~$300 today) and occasional hunger. He captures the animus of a much larger group of teachers, clerks and petty civil servants who have proletarian incomes but cling to a Tory identity. Orwell’s conclusion that social identity must be subordinated to common economic interests anticipates the most bitter debates between progressives today.

It's essentially two separate long essays. The first part is a harrowing description of the slums in industrial England around the late 1920s early 30s. The second concerns class distinctions and the inability of the socialist movement to bridge them. His descriptions of the wackjobs infesting it are eerily familiar and match up perfectly to the SJW/ProgLeft lunatics of today. A must read for anyone interested in the genesis of his later more famous Animal Farm and 1984.

The first half of the book contains some great descriptions of what it was like to work in a coal mine in the early 1900's. Now it's worth reading just for that, but that's mostly in chapters 2 and 3. He says they used to work naked. I thought that was awesome. But the whole second half of the book is basically an essay about the workers parties of his day. Basically he says they appeared to outsiders as disingenuous and weirdos (though the case is strong enough he pretty clearly believes it himself). Here are a couple of choice quotes:"The ordinary man may not flinch from a dictatorship of the proletariat, if you offer it tactfully; offer him a dictatorship of the prigs, and he gets ready to fight." (Yes, I had to look up the meaning of "prig" too)"Here you come upon the important fact that every revolutionary opinion draws part of its strength from a secret conviction that nothing can be changed"

The authors spend the first chapter of the book bragging about how much white people hate this book. It's not hard to see why since they clearly have a chip on their shoulder and an ax to grind. I hate racial politics and this book is a force-feeding of it.Honestly, people just need to treat each other with kindness and decency, but books like this promote division and distrust (even though they claim to do otherwise).

This was a required book for a grad course. Sue and Sue have great reputations for staying abreast of emergent topics in diversity and oppression. However, I was disappointed that there was no focus on multiracial individuals. The authors basically ignored the confusion and identity crises that multiracial people experience, and all of the proposed cultural development models were built on the assumption that an individual had some sense of racial/ethnic identity to begin with, which is not the case for many people, myself included. As one of only three racial minority students in my graduate cohort (which is a problem, in and of itself), I was really looking forward to this diversity course, and the book (and the course, overall) was a bit of a let down. I didn't dislike it, necessarily, I just felt that it was incomplete.

If this would not have been a REQUIRED reading for a grad course at an extremely leftist college, I would not have touched this book with a ten-foot pole. It literally pushes white privilege and racism, stating that every white person is racist whether they realize it or not. It forces white individuals to "realize" that they are privileged and racist. This could not be any further from the truth. This book made me very angry - I have no microaggression or racism towards any individual regardless of age, race, religion, etc. VERY POOR READ - VERY HARD TO READ. I wish colleges would not require such biased education material that hinders the mindset of individual students. My 4.0 GPA was almost hindered because of my strong feelings towards the writers' biased opinion of the white population. My professor told me on many occasions that my beliefs were "wrong" and that I needed to "open my mind." Leftist agenda and "molding minds" in college should not serve as a basis for learning how to handle biases and prejudices within the counseling world. Mind-molding and belief-changing SHOULD NOT be happening in college... PERIOD. A person should not change who they are or what they believe in order to be successful in life. #nonconformity - Stay strong and stay true to yourself fellow grad students.

I will be reading this again in the future. Sue and Sue opened my eyes to diversity. I am a white, straight, Christian male. I read this for a class. It made a positive impact on my personal views on racism, sexism, and other types of bias I might have. It also helped me understand some of the perspectives culturally diverse clients may bring to my table, and some ideas about how to handle my own work in light of these lerspectives.

The content of the book is very good, I have no complaints about that. It seems to be an accurate representation of how culturally diverse individuals feel about living in America. It was a required text for my Master's level Multicultural Counseling course. As far as I can tell the authors did an exceptional job on that end. The reason I'm giving this book 3 stars is because the book itself was poorly constructed, as in, the book was physically falling apart upon arrival. It seems the quality of this book is not very good. The pages on the few chapters were not even sewn into the spine of the book and I was constantly worried they were about the fall out. I bought this book new so I assume it would not be a problem. But to be fair, this was the cheapest option for buying the book new. I'm just concerned about the pages falling out every time I open it.

This is a great textbook. Derald Sue and David Sue have made EuroAmerican counseling their punching bag and have put the EuroAmerican counselors in America on notice that they are participating in racism, classism, sexism and who knows what else. I know I felt beat up by it. But I'm a better person for the knowledge. I don't have to be a counselor with a 50% rate of clients not returning after the first session, because I use microaggressions in my counseling.

Easy read. Class was split at first on whether they fully agreed or not with author. Leaving just a few at the end to still not agree, but acknowledge some value. Diversity is not the easiest thing to talk about, but this book is certainly on a higher level than some corporate 'diversity' training class. Many will have to learn, unlearn, or accept assumptions/that privileges exist. Straight up, main audience is the dominant-culture counselors than marginalized. He does address this and you'll see the book builds more than just validating those in the margin. Kinda pricey, yes, but I didn't regret its worth after the semester. It'll be on my work-shelf and I know I'll be referencing it for diverse clients.

A lot of bias in this book. Hard to read it.

As a feminist mom raising feminist boys, I'm proud to have this book on our bookshelf. I always appreciate progressive & inclusive books such as these to educate children to be who they want to be. We don't do gender stereotype roles in this house!Short and sweet board book geared towards toddlers but the slightly older will still appreciate the message. My boys are 4 and love their "feminist book".

Our son loves the colorful illustrations, and we love the wonderful message. We can’t wait until he can read it to himself!

This book is absolutely adorable and fitting, but mine was bent out of shape and dented when it arrived. (I'm guessing it was like this since it was in an envelope instead of a box)

Fun to read. Colorful illustrations. A positive message. What’s not to love?

Our daughter can not get enough of this book. She wants to read it often. The inclusion and message are spot on. She especially enjoys the part about emotional expression.

First, I would like to thank counselorchick, Kevin Johnson, bankee and any others who have obvious resentments towards AA. It is a program developed in the 1930’s and has been the most effective treatment for their members. It is a fellowship of men and women who have the same desire to stay sober. People who follow the program and commit to it eventually become happy, joyous and free. The program has evolved over time to what it is today. People who are cursed with this disease are NOT able to drink in moderation. I am not saying that I completely believe in the entire philosophy but most of it has merit. I think it is opalling and disgraceful for anyone to blame AA for hurting more people than they’ve helped! Are you f*****g kidding me? There is only one person to blame for the behaviors we exubed. Look in the mirror for the guilty party. The negativity in these posts truly proves how restless, irritable and discontent you are. I’m sure there are other programs that successfully help those with the disease of addiction. AA is not for everyone. It is also never AA’s fault when someone relapses. We are still there at every meeting, trying to help the next sick and suffering person.Your portrayal of the “program” is flawed and inaccurate to say the least. There have been 100’s of thousands of people who are now happy, joyous, free and living a life free of anger, depression, sadness and fear.

Simpley put this book will save your life and inspire you to find a path free of addiction . The first half of the book is how it works in AA the second half is all inspirational stories that truely do inspire you to live a better free of addiction life. Often at first when I first considered I might have an addiction problem I read the stories in the back of the book . I found every story I read was about me in some way . After a few reads I knew it was time to confront my addiction issues . Becuse of this book I am now free of my alcohol addiction and starting to piece my life back together . Any time I feel weak or need a bit fo inspiration I open the book and read for a while .This book is the back bone to AA and 12 step programs it will sve your life if you are honest ans willing . Its said you must hit rock bottom before you can make the journey to recovery but maybe if you read this book you will find a way that you can avoid the horor of the rock bottom experience. Good luck to you may you find the peace and serenity you so deserve in life give this book a shot and you will find a new way of life .

I'm not an alcoholic, but a good friend of mine suggested that I read this to gain a better understanding of "what she's all about." I'm truly glad I did. Not only did it deliver on her claim in spades, but it provided me with one hell of a perspective on everything she and so many others have dealt with, and just how vital a group like Alcoholics Anonymous is. I love reading things that provide me with that level of insight.

I’ve been sober almost six months. Thank god for AA and other such programs.About this book- it explains everything. First half talks about how AA came to be and last half shares inspirational stories of other addicts and alcoholics who have worked the program and now lead sober lifestyles. Very helpful and motivating.For anyone out there struggling with addiction, even if you aren’t ready to seek help, read this book. You at least will know you aren’t alone.

I'm so grateful for this book. My sweet daddy suffered from alcoholism and died unrecovered. Growing up in that, I had a lot of resentment and unresolved pain. This book showed me that my Dad was sick, and it helped me see that even though I do not drink- I was effected by alcoholism. Since I do not have this allergy/disease, I didn't understand it. It makes more sense to me now, and it has helped me on my healing journey. I cannot recommend this enough! I know you get audio chapters on Amazon (I believe it is the 1st Edition). I love the 4th edition. I believe it is worth buying even if you can hear it for free.

Don't get the Kindle version if you need to refer to page numbers. Cryptic "locations" (see pic) will not help if you want to use the "Big Book" for any serious work or study. There are plenty of free or online versions available that are paginated. As far as the actual content goes, who am I to argue with the cornerstone manuscript for a fellowship that has proven to help millions worldwide. IMHO modern medicine will never be able to come close to this free and ubiquitous prescription for dealing with ALL addictions (in MY lifetime at least).

Written many years ago and still relevant for todays alcoholic. I felt the book was telling my story and many times I was struck by the economy and perfection of the prose. i.e. 'a vision for you.' In my opinion this is very much an inspired novel that speaks directly to the alcoholic and offers a proven method of recovery and life seemingly beyond the reach of the active alcoholic....Indispensable information for the suffering alcoholics looking for recovery.

It’s nice to have this book available on Kindle. I use my phone, tablets, Mac and Kindle regularly, so this works well for me. The one thing that I would like to see different about this Kindle edition is to have the pages numbered just as they are for the paper book. The table of contents can help to locate specific information, but generally, I feel that this ebook still falls short. It would be far easier to follow along with other readers and references made about specific passages during meetings and when working with others. This edition doesn’t do this, so I don’t like to use the ebook at meetings. I would love to be able to go to a specific page and have the book handy wherever I go. Other than that, this ebook is still nice to have whenever I want to read it.

This is the second book I've read of Kerry Hamm, But I'm Allergic to Toradol!: Real Stories from a Small-Town ER. She tells many very interesting stories some are funny and some are not. She also offers helpful hints to enable you to understand the conditions that emergency room staff are going through. I'm very glad of the first book of hers that I picked up because it led me to this book. I believe I have collected all of the authors books and I intend to read each one. She's a great storyteller

I have enjoyed reading your books. They have reinforced some thoughts I've had and taught me others -- about empathy, sympathy, abuse, ignorance, about physical, mental and emotional exhaustion, in short - about the human condition. Try to ignore the negative comments. The people who wrote them have never walked in your shoes.

All of these books by Kerry Hamm are hilarious! While there are some sad stories for the most part these stories will have you shaking your head at the ridiculous excuses people use. I highly recommend any book by Ms. Hamm.

I am a registered nurse and I just love reading all of your story some sad but true and some funny. A great mix of things. I wish I could find a way to know the names of all the books you have written so I can make sure to teach them all.

Enjoyed reading this inside stories of a small town ER. I can see why the author would both love and hate her job.

True to life stories, but while some are funny, others are depressing. Don't read these books thinking they are comedy. I suggest these books for students in the medical/nursing fields, and for anyone who thinks they should attend their local Hospital.

A very entertaining, quick read. A series of vignettes both interesting and informative. I look forward to the next edition of Kerry Hamm's stories--all true.

I love these books by Kerry Hamm. Typos or not, I think they're great. Funny, interesting, and on occasion sad, Ms. Hamm's books cover one of my favorite reading genres in the best way possible.
