Wonderful read. The author has lots of stats & references, which is essential in an opinion-based book like this (in my view). It's great to have a viewpoint, but if you can't reference facts objectively, it's a rant and I likely wouldn't read it. This book, however, referenced IMF figures, and had lots of charts that were objectively prepared. Also, the author was dead on right with his predictions of a financial problem with the GSEs. This was an amazingly correct call. I would say the appeal would be for finance & investment community. You'd need to be comfortable with the financial institutions and players, otherwise his references may seem arcane and spurious. Right now, with the dollar going up, it's a good time for the author to write a follow up book, as clearly the dollar crisis has not happened the way the author writes. However, given his prescient call on the GSEs, a follow up book on what's happened to the dollar as of late would be a worthwhile read. Also, event with the dollar ascendancy of late, this book is a good read, as it provides a well researched alternative perspective.

Since the breakdown of Bretton Woods in the early 1970's and the end of the gold standard, the dollar has become the international reserve currency. The 20 years prior to 1970 international reserves increased only about 55%, but since 1970, with the adoption of the dollar standard, reserves have increased over 2,000%. This is primarily a result of US current account deficits, which last year ran about $600 billion - about 3% of GDP. Asian central banks hold about $2 trillion US dollar-denominated reserve assets. This surge in international reserves has created huge imbalances and it is the subject of this book by financial analyst Richard Duncan.The dollar standard has allowed the US to finance incredibly large deficits by printing more dollars. The dollar standard has on the upside ushered in the age of globalization that has allowed Asian economies - first Japan, then the Tigers, and now China - to devolop by exporting to the US without importing equal amounts, leaving Asian central banks with large stockpiles of dollar reserves. And what can Asian central banks do with these reserves? About the only thing they can do is invest in US corporate stocks and bonds, T-bills, and US agency debt such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. (We've been enjoying low mortgage rates because the Asian central banks buy up our debt so we can take out more.) And all these investments in return allow US consumers to buy more of their exports - call it vendor financing.According to Duncan, these current account deficits and current account surpluses have already wrought havoc with the world economy: it caused the asset and stock market bubble in Japan in the 1980s; it caused the currency crisis in Malaysia and Thailand in the 1990s (Duncan was an analyst working in Thailand at the time and correctly predicted its occurence); and it is currently fueling the real estate boom in the US.Asia's export-led strategies require that dollar reserves are reinvested in the US; this prevents their currencies from appreciating. Indeed, if the Bank of China or the Bank of Japan were to invest in the Euro or any other currency, the bankers and politicians of those countries would quickly protest because it would drive up their currencies and make their exports less competitive.So then with the US increasing the world's international reserves at a rate of $600 billion a year, everyone is still happy for the time being. Asian countries are growing rapidly and American consumers have endless supplies of credit - using their homes as ATMs - however, this imbalance, unsustainable and in the long run, will precipitate an economic crisis. Even correcting this imbalance, if not done prudently, could precipitate a world economic slowdown.This book was written before the recent decision by China to stop pegging the yuan to the dollar. This was a baby step in the right direction.Duncan's analysis of the problem is very good, his policy recommendations, however, are questionable. He suggests, for example, giving global central bank status to the International Monetary Fund. That's a nonstarter for reasons obvious to Republicans. He also advocates a global minimum wage, giving workers more money to soak up excess supply. I can already hear the critics screaming no "world government."The main problem that needs to be addressed - and Duncan stresses it many times - is that there needs to be a regulatory mechanism in foreign-exchange markets. Central banks intervene in currency markets for their own benefit - such creating an export strategy - instead of looking for ways to smooth global business cycles. China, with its revaluation of its currency, is looking to become a responsible global player - we hope. If the powers that be do not act in concert to coordinate a soft landing of the current imbalances, we will all be heading for some frightening times.

Probably one of the greatest weaknesses in American economic education is ignorance of global macro-economics. This book will serve as an introduction to the topic for many people - some of them with degrees in economics. Duncan's thesis is that the "approaching financial crisis" started when we abandoned the gold standard in the early 20th century. (There's a great story here but he must abbreviate.) It was replaced with the Bretton Woods gold/silver exchange system (largely designed by John Maynard Keynes) which served to keep government spending in check until abandoned during the first Nixon administration. Due to this monetary error, an uncontrolled infusion of global liquidity has caused tremendous imbalances, particularly in countries running trade surpluses. He demonstrates that similar infusions were the proximate cause of the "Great Depression," various major US recessions, the Japanese meltdown and the Asian Tigers' crash. The error is compounding with America's twin deficits and - the end result must be global financial pain as the markets equilibrate. He draws fascinating parallels between global depressions and between individual countries at different times to support his thesis. He also thinks he has a solution that would ease the pain. I think his story holds together pretty well and is supported with believable illustrations. It is the Austrian Economists' story of the business cycle globalized and out of the control of monetarist central bankers. The greatest value to me, and I have read most of the authors he quotes, is that his story provides insights into what central bankers, the IMF, and World Bank were thinking when they took the actions they did. After all, he worked for the IMF "in the belly of the beast" and had first hand local experience in various Asian currency crises. This is no arm chair academic. Sadly, his solutions are not of the same quality as his definition of the problem which I consider excellent. I believe we are witnessing a true paradigm shift where the Western Democracies will no longer retain their enforced pre-eminence in the markets; transportation and communication technologies will act to level the playing field for workers and businesses everywhere. They're catching up out there in the second world as they cast aside their ideological chains and there isn't a darned thing we can do about it. There is no "solution" and I think Duncan would agree. He only hopes to ease the pain of transition. Duncan's notion of a global minimum wage is disappointing given the quality of his first three sections defining the problem - and seems to demonstrate that he doesn't really understand macro-economics after all. Still, the book is is an entertaining bargain and very worth while to read. It has me pawing through abstracts to update the charts and graphs that are now a couple of years out of date. If you are not aware of the fiat money debate, that is - money not fully backed up by something extremely difficult to acquire - and thousands of years in the contest, then this will be a real eye opener for you.

It happened twice throughout the book, if you can't get your heroes straight that is a huge problem. Grammar issues aside, the chemistry between them was meh to say the least. There was no plot development and the so called drama that leslie was soo butthurt over was such a let down,no details on how he came to fall for hee. I normally like this author but this one was rushed, no editing and felt very much like an outline.

This story is great. Happy that Leslie and Maks had history that they had to overcome. Leslie is a tough woman but is putty when it comes to Maks. Maks is easy going but he had to learn to accept and appreciate the past in order to save his future with Leslie. ❤️

Maks and Leslie was a slow burning romance worth the wait. Short, sweet and too the point with no middle man or woman to interfere with what was blooming between them. When you know love you know. Can't wait until the final novella.

As I was browsing, I came across the first book in the Wall flower series and I was hooked. Each book was a joy. It was nice to escape. Highly recommend. T.C. Clark keep up the good work. Thank you.

The table of contents is interactive, so it's use is friendly to going to the subject with a click. You can scan the Table of Contents, so you can just click and look at what you would like to read about. The text is what you'll find, no pictures except on the Digital cover, so the book is lacking any real merit in regards to what the author can do, maybe he is just a guy, who writes digital books. I've found some of those out there and usually I will go through their book, then delete it. This may be just that. This book ends as an advertisement for a Hong Kong business suggestions for making orders and it is not very long, so you'll get there pretty fast.

I thought this was about how to airbrush T-Shirts, not buying and marketing them. Some helpful info, but not much. Oh well, live an learn. Bye.

This book really did not teach me much with its rambling and changing direction within each paragraph. Very hard read.

This is a fascinating read, and it has been narrated very well for the audible media. It is very unique in the way it follows an ordinary love story, and then interjects with deep analysis. It branches into psychology, philosophy, religion, etc. It is very soothing especially if you are going through an emotional heart burn.

The beautiful and complex prose is enough alone to make you read it but then there's that incredible insight that you can only give when perceiving something from a subjective second person position. It will make you analyse not only the way you are affecting your beloved but the 'how come' and 'why' they affect you.

An articulate account of 'first true love' and heartbreak. One is astonished by the record of fine detail and lucidity that de Botton maintains right all the way through the relationship,but again,no surprise from de Botton. It's a shame that such self-awareness didn't make for a better result(blinder mortals have achieved greater loves). Spoiler alert- But,without irony, therein lies the key to love- the ability to just be as lucid in heartbreak.The bullet-point format is a clever variation that rids the book of unnecessary detail. It would have added further richness if he had expounded on the process of 'forgetting',in the last chapters though. However,this book has helped me especially understand the mechanics of how 'love at first sight' happens in a real life relationship, a concept I'd always mildly abhorred.A sequel on long-term relationships and tragic love would complete Essays on Love, but it's also clear that deBotton's personal experience separates this from a psychological/philosophical work.

What a beautiful roller coaster of a book. He says the most obvious things, the things we know but ignore in such a way that I was left speechless. I guess we all want to know what THIS thing is, and he does a pretty damn good job at getting below the surface. A beautiful fast read for anyone wanting some insight and a bit of a slap in the face.

This is one of the best books by De Botton. Easy, humorous, profound. A personal journey translated into mature thinking. A mirror for everyone who had had the fortune to love: paradise and inferno. Very good.

Personally I didn't like the style of how the spey was written, however in saying that, there were some beautifully put statements about certain aspects of love which I took note of for future use.More than a few times, aspects hit home and I found myself nodding in agreement as I had experienced what was happening. Realistically a truth on love, and threw complications.

Great book

Profound insight into the addiction of falling in love, definitely explains the difference between love and the transitory feeling of being in love.

On December 14, 1911, the classical age of polar exploration ended when Norway's Roald Amundsen conquered the South Pole. His competitor for the prize, Britain's Robert Scott, arrived one month later--but died on the return with four of his men only 11 miles from their next cache of supplies. But it was Scott, ironically, who became the legend, Britain's heroic failure, "a monument to sheer ambition and bull-headed persistence. His achievement was to perpetuate the romantic myth of the explorer as martyr, and ... to glorify suffering and self-sacrifice as ends in themselves." The world promptly forgot about Amundsen. Biographer Ronald Huntford's attempt to restore Amundsen to glory, first published in 1979 under the title Scott and Amundsen, has been thawed as part of the Modern Library Exploration series, captained by Jon Krakauer (of Into Thin Air fame). The Last Place on Earth is a complex and fascinating account of the race for this last great terrestrial goal, and it's pointedly geared toward demythologizing Scott. Though this was the age of the amateur explorer, Amundsen was a professional: he left little to chance, apprenticed with Eskimos, and obsessed over every detail. While Scott clung fast to the British rule of "No skis, no dogs," Amundsen understood that both were vital to survival, and they clearly won him the Pole. Amundsen in Huntford's view is the "last great Viking" and Scott his bungling opposite: "stupid ... recklessly incompetent," and irresponsible in the extreme--failings that cost him and his teammates their lives. Yet for all of Scott's real or exaggerated faults, he understood far better than Amundsen the power of a well-crafted sentence. Scott's diaries were recovered and widely published, and if the world insisted on lionizing Scott, it was partly because he told a better story. Very excellent look at the personalities of two polar explorers, their journeys, and their fateful competition finally to reach the South Pole. I was fascinated by the differences between these two people, Amundsen and Scott. Amundsen was methodical to an extreme. He learned about every aspect of polar travel, through visits with explorers, volunteering on expeditions, reading, and direct training about skiing, running dogs, nutition, sailing into polar waters, etc. etc. He was conpulsive about understanding everything possible about everything that might have an impact on an expedition. Amundsen also valued the knowledge of indigenous people about traveling in polar regions, food, clothing, etc. He didn't see them as savages with nothing to teach. Scott was haphazard and careless in his approach. He took the attitude that a large and well-funded team could wing it and overcome problems as they occurred. He didn't value the knowledge of indigenous people who had lived in the Arctic for eons. He took ponies to the Antarctic as pack animals. He hated sled dogs. What is there for a pony to eat in the pack ice? Nothing. What can a dog eat? Seals. Penguins. In the worst case even another dog. The author also discusses the more general differences between Norwegians and the English as regards exploration and even behavior toward subordinates.

This book launched me onto a 3 month reading project of other books related to the subject matter, including books about Laurence Oates and I especially enjoyed Cherry-Gerard's very comprehensive work The Worst journey in the World, and finally Captain Scott by Fiennes, which debunks much of the misinformation presented by Huntford, generally without true references. You will get a different perspective on both R.F. Scott and E. A. Wilson from these other books , and, it's helpful to get beyond Huntford's compulsively negative rendition. I gave this book five stars initially, and it is very well-written, but I have come full-circle and see it as too biased against the English Expedition personnel. I found that Fiennes book is especially good at giving the whole picture including both good and bad sides of the all of the main characters. Fiennes carefully picks apart every one of Huntford's mis-statements. This book presents a negative bias toward Captain R. F. Scott. This is not to deny that Scott make technical errors or lapses of judgement which undoubtedly contributed to the Expedition's failure, like foot wear not up to the task, and insisting on man hauling, and failure to remember from 1902-03 that paraffin (kerosene) typically had faulty valves which leaks the contents to atmosphere in very cold temperatures. Because paraffin cans were red, the polar team placed them atop the cairns to over-winter, guaranteeing that they'd be empty a year later, when badly needed. But you can't blame the extended cold periods with colder than normal temperatures on Captain Scott. And even with food and fuel, those poor three who died in the tent had feet which had failed completely. You just can't walk around a high plateau with wet of freezing feet, for months at a time....Antarctica is not a forgiving place and technical mistakes become fatal mistakes.

Having read a number of works that neglect to properly analyze the bungling of Robert F Scott, and some that attempt to persuade the reader that Scott was primarily interested in Science, and only secondarily in attaining the pole first, this book is a breath of fresh air that truly examines, compares, and contrasts the two expeditions. The great irony is that Amundsen was so over-prepared already that he could have afforded to "do science" also. However, he never pretended that the pole was secondary to science. Had he intended on science, he would have had even more provisions and preparations for the mission. Scott was trying to win the pole and make scientific observations while being poorly prepared for either aspect. Amundsen planned the finest details with years of preparation and with double and triple redundancy in provisions and equipment. Scott arrived at the barrier without understanding, or being trained for, dogs, skis, optimal clothing, or anything else that mattered. If hauling sleds was his backup plan, then he was completely underprepared for even that. He was doomed before he ever set sail.Scott was such a bungler that I would go so far as to say that his name does not belong along with Amundsen's at the South Pole station.

When this book first came out close to 30 years ago it was such an inspiration to me that it prompted my two lengthy expedition trips to the Antarctic.I've used this book as a lesson in leadership to young people attending high school and even college (it was required reading in a leadership class that one of my students just took over the summer at Cornell University).The difference in leadership styles demonstrated here between Scott and Amundsen is night and day and it's clear that this is one of the main reasons why Amundsen reached the South Pole 34 days ahead of Scott and why he was able to live out his life basking in the glory of his accomplishments while Scott and his team relied on Scott's wife to try to drum up support for her husband's tragic end succumbing to the cold just 11 miles from a supply depot.Reading the book was great but "reading" it again through the CDs while driving was very enjoyable. There were numerous times when I arrived home and sat in the driveway listening to another chapter before heading into the house.
