I've been following Rose for about 6 years and I even have a tag for her on my blog so yes i have to consider myself a hugh fan. I think its fair giving that backstory before I get on to the review. Her book Rose's heavenly cakes were my very first digital cakebible and whenever someone asks for a cake that isnt red velvet or poundcake that book is where I start looking for inspiration. This book on the other hand is not about baking the most difficult cake with the weirdest pronounced name or where each cake has milelong ingredientlist followed by 2-3 pages on how to cut the basil the right way before you boil it 10 secs in carbonated water - this book is all about the basics and how to. Even if you have baked your entire life there is always some new tricks you can learn and this book has a lot of them. The recipes are - as always with Rose - well written, easy to follow and filled with good pictures with instructions and when you think the recipe is over and you turn the page to the next she gives you variations on how to make it, for example change a single pie to 8 smaller ones and what to use and timers and temperatures. Brilliant. It might seem like a small thing but for a lot of people this should come handy. The index is sorted as it should, all cookies with cookies not by holidays or ingredients or the worst example ive seen which was sorted after seasons. Another winner for me as a non-american is that everything is listed with both american meassurements and grams, no need to convert, its already there. If you feel insecure about baking this is the book for you also if any person out there wanna start baking with little to no experience this is the book I would buy. There are a lot of "how to" books out there and internet has even more info and guides if you are into that sort of things but this book has it all in an easy written and pics not to mention a great collection of cookies, cakes and pastries. Dont miss out.

someone please guide me to the area of this “Baking Basics” book where Rose has given detailed I nstructions on how to prep a whole egg before portioning out “1/2” of an egg or “3/4” of an egg for some of the recipes in this book! Surely I am missing where this important bit of accurate baking information/instruction is printed. Do I swirl the yolk and white with a fork and expect it to be properly combined then measure, or do I risk incorporating a little air by gently whisking the egg which better combines the yolk with the white? I would really like to know exactly what Rose recommends. Guess I will just skip all those recipes calling for part of a whole egg. UGH!

Beautiful book with easy explanations and step by step pictures. Well made book. And I already baked the first cake from it

I love Rose’s recipe, everyone in the family says the dessert is very tasty. My husband will even check if the dessert is from Rose’s book every time I make a new one. :DThis book is full of all the classic American baking, easy to follow, lots of photos, very detailed. And you don’t need to worry where you can get the ingredients, you can find everything from your local grocery store.I really love Rose’s baking book.

This is exactly what I was hoping for. First off, the physical quality of the book is excellent. It lays flat and has good quality thick pages. I know this sounds like a minor thing, but for a cookbook that will be opened and closed, and laid out on the counter, and flipped thorough...it's important. It also has an attached ribbon bookmark, which also is a good touch.Content-wise, it's exactly what I was looking for. Detailed instructions for pastry basics, like pate a choux, pastry cream, etc. Tons of pictures for the various steps, and pages of troubleshooting, i.e., if this goes wrong, then it was probably because... The recipes are given in both volume and mass, which is good. I know it's better to bake by mass, but sometimes volume is just easier. And the recipes are extremely precise (Who would give a measurement of 1/2 cup minus 3/4 tsp?...or something like that...can't remember it exactly). It also gives options (using the food processor versus doing by hand). It clearly explains upfront what you should do ahead of time (mise en place) and what equipment will be needed. The only thing that is not perfect, is that because it's soooo detailed, sometimes it takes a while to find your place in a recipe and see what's next on the fly...even if you read it ahead of time. But that's just the way it is when you have that level of detail.I'm kind of a Food Network junkie, so it's nice to see all these pastries they talk about clearly explained. I would say it's a very good teaching book, but would still be of value for more experienced bakers. (So far I've made 3 recipes...all very good). Very, very pleased with this purchase.

Great book with lots of pictures, though not too many new recipes if you already have Roses other books. Still a great resource

I have all of Rose Levy Beranbaum's Cookbooks, and they are almost always the ones I grab first. Her attention to detail is unmatched. I like the fact that she included different sizes of some of her best recipes, such as White Cake, or White Cupcakes than she has in other books, so you can use whichever one suits you for your specific purpose. Follow her instructions to the letter, or you may not like the results. Once you get used to her methods, everything is pretty easy to follow. I am a pastry chef and I find you can't go wrong with any of Rose's recipes if you want something wonderful!!

This was a Christmas gift for my sister in law, along with an apron. She LOVED it and raved about the color photos. She loves to bake and has tried other cook books and Kindle books. She was very excited to try this out.

It’s so refreshing to read a horse book with a less-than-virtuous heroine! Even though the character is only nineteen, Zoe’s voice has a world-weary quality. She’s grown up fast on the A-circuit, sleeping with many questionable men and even getting roped into a brief life of crime. Now that her junior career is over, Zoe feels like a has-been and her dreams of becoming a professional hunter rider seem far away.Zoe’s life embodies many of the contradictions you see in the horse world—Zoe grew up poor but she’s used to rubbing shoulders with (and bedding) the sons of billionaires. She lives in a crummy apartment and has a saddle that costs thousands of dollars. And perhaps above all else although her personal life is messy and undisciplined, she can ride like a dream.I found the central romantic relationship to be so compelling because Zoe is such a great horsewoman, for all of her faults. This isn’t the typical romance where the heroine gets ‘schooled’ by a wiser, more domineering man. The couple has so much to learn from one another (and Zoe is definitely the better rider of the pair). The ending is ambiguous so I look forward to reading more books in the series!I also have to say that Kim’s ability to describe what is a good (and not-so-good) hunter ride is incredible—the book obviously revolves around what makes a great derby horse and the description of the rides, scoring, and the politics of the hunter world are all spot-on. During the climax I was actually squirming in my chair, wondering…will the trot jump work out…will he get a true hand gallop? The book is a great love letter to the discipline of riding hunters, demonstrating it is every bit as exciting on its own terms as the jumpers, eventing, and racing

Kim's show experience makes the reader feel as though she's right on the grounds. Zoe ' s struggles are real, and only parental ostriches think otherwise. Can't wait to read the next in series.

Was really looking for another good horse story....what I got was a story which sounded like it was written by a trashy teenager! Horrible. It will go in the trash. I had expected I might get as good a novel as the Dressage Chronicles! Those books by Karen McGoldrick were truly fabulous!

I have read most of this author's books and I like the way her dialogue, and her descriptions of the challenges young girls face in the horse show world, ring true. This latest series is a little more "grown up" in terms of the age of the protagonists and the sexual descriptions but the focus is on the challenges of growing up in an unique environment.

OBSESSED with all your books. I've read them cover to cover within the first day they come out. Please keep the series going. Can't say enough good things about the books and your writing!

About the Author

DIANE COOK and LEN JENSHEL are two of America's foremost landscape photographers. Their work has been published in numerous magazines including National Geographic, Conde Nast Traveler, Audubon, The New Yorker, and Fortune. They have also published numerous fine art books of their photographs, including Travels in the American West, HOT SPOTS: America's Volcanic Landscape, and AQUARIUM. The recipients of numerous fellowships, their work has been exhibited in more than 100 museums and collections worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Yokohama Museum in Tokyo. SUSAN TYLER HITCHCOCK has written 16 nonfiction books ranging in genre from literary history to nature guide to family memoir. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Virginia and, as senior editor at National Geographic Books, oversees the science, health, and nature list. What a disappointment compared to other photo books National Geographic has published! Most of the photos were ones found in other NG books but the quality of the print/copy in so many of the photos was sub-par. Many looked like color Xerox prints instead of the fine quality I usually associate with NG books. Just because they were 'night' photos doesn't mean they were good photos. Save your money.

One of the best purchases I've made on Amazon. Bought this as a gift for a friend's birthday.The photographs are exceptional and varied. Even with very low light, the pictures are mind blowing.Worth the price.

Gave the book to a disabled friend for Christmas. He said he loved the photos but the book was very heavy. Never considered that when I purchased. He just is not as strong as he once was...

Naya is a strong, independent, loveable, trouble magnet! I could not put this book down! Jasmine Walt is very good at finishing one plot, and going straight into another that you just want to get the next book ASAP to know what is going on.In the last book. the Chief Mage decided to make Naya his apprentice, as well as discovering the corruption and issues his new city has been hiding and has been taking actions to fix them. The Chief Mage has given Naya additional tasks, along with her training to keep her busy, but not to pay for her apartment that she has stubbornly chose to occupy outside of the palace. As long as she does what is expected of her, the Chief Mage is content to let her pursue any bounties she finds. Bound by Magic is the exciting continuation of Burned by Magic, and picks up pretty much exactly where the first book left off. Sunaya Baine, a hot-headed, overly emotional, and impulsive shifter works to balance her new responsibilities to the Chief Mage while still keeping up with the silver murder investigations. Her friends seek (who are also well written, with their own strengths) support her in her quest, even though her loyalties are extending towards mages, who rule over the other races in the Northia Federation. Walt's take on shifters and mages isn't entirely run-of-the-mill, and the racial tensions between characters kept this urban fantasy fresh and new. The chemistry between Sunaya and The Chief Mage is palpable, but there's still a great deal of unresolved sexual tension that I expect will make the future books rather exciting.

Jasmine Walt has done IT again in her latest book! By it, I mean created literary magic for the human mind! I love a well built world, and the world building continues to be phenomenal. This series is definitely an urban fantasy. The level of writing is on a similar level as Ilona Andrews (a high level comparison), although Jasmine Walt has her own brand and style of writing. I found the imagery often building pictures or movies in my head, just the right amount of detailed descriptions to build the scene, characters, and action. The characters are believable, and the main character is sassy, independent, and not afraid to take action!I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the first book of this series. Highly recommended!Thanks to the author providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have to say I really enjoyed this book but at the same time I was a little disappointed.The rhythm is fast paced and there is plenty of action but it fell short for me in the characters development part (It actually felt that there was only action in the book).I was really looking forward to see the evolution of Sunnaya and Iannis relationship and to see if they would grow to work more as a team but it is still felt that there was actually no relationship between the two of them or that it was rather stifled (I am not even speaking on a romantic point of view but just as two fellow persons who interact on a regular basis).Iannis still seems too one dimensional for me at the moment.Sunnaya's relations with other people in general seem under-developed in general and I hope to see her evolving more on this point in the next book.There seem to be something going on with Larkin and I really really hope that nothing will come out of it as I definitely loathe love triangles.All in all in it is as solid book with some flaws, but I'll definitely be reading the next one (although I hope that it won't be one of those series that drag on for 10 books before things wraps up).

Being the apprentice to the Chief Mage may sound exciting but it comes with all the boring tasks that the mages don't want to do themselves. Luckily, Sunaya still has her Enforcer badge along with the danger that job entails. After Iannis gives her leave to investigate missing shifters during her off-time, she finds a much more tangled web of deceit weaving throughout the shifter community. Will Sunaya be able to help the very community that distrusts and hates her on sight because she's half mage and half shifter?

Having met the author in her Shadow series I was intrigued to read the beginning of this one. I found that while the heroine was similar, in certain respects there was a completely different and intriguing World in which she functioned. I have thoroughly enjoyed her adventures and I found this book as well as the whole series to be most interesting and at times, quite enthralling. One of the things I like best is that the plot unfolds in a good way without excessive violence in interesting settings. Lots of fun!
